Ohio riders this weekend

Hope y'all had fun........ sounds like it. I'll work on the title/registration thing and join in next time.

I did get to spend sometime riding w/my son this weekend so all was not lost.

I too have to get a title for my bike and my son's bike. Anyone know what kind of hoops I'll have to just through to get them?

Anybody riding sunday the 6th?

whtkdxtra check with your local dmv office. A friend here in columbus had to take his bike to the dmv, they had someone go out and get the vin#. It took about a week to get a title. I was talking to another person who said thier friend got a title made on the spot.

I just moved to Marysville to work at Honda and am looking for weekend riders. I haven't gotten all of the license crap yet but I'm working on it. I used to ride every weekend at Turkey Creek, KY and would like to find something similiar.

as soon as i get my stuff together guys ill be riding again. i know that Ray is planning on comming down 2 weekends for this weekend, so maybe yall can join us for that

Well I went to Wayne National today with a couple of pals. They assured me I was OK with just a $5 pass bought at the local Shell station. Because it's a "National" Forest, I rationalized. After all, I'd been there once before and it all went well.

After a couple of hours out, a Hocking (or was it Athens) County Sherrif stopped us at a corner. He then asked us for our registrations and two of us were out of luck! Since we were so cooperative (real hard to do) he gave one ticket and and instructed us to split it.

And then he said we even needed insurance!

Well color me ignorant! I mean I had no idea you HAD to have insurance on yer flippin' dirt bike!

I mean I can begrudgingly see if you're riding on The Man's land you need to title and register and play by The Man's Rules. But does The Man have to let his PAC buddies in on everything?

And then on the way out, there was a real live National Forest Ranger. I watched as he handed out mandatory donation orders to two other guys. So much for non-enforcement of the rules!

Do you know how hard it is to sit there on a KX500 and let a guy on a 400cc utility kwad write you a ticket? :| God it was temping. But I don't know my way around there at all so it was easy to control the urge. WHEW!

I'm a woods rider mainly a a little H/S racing when I have the time. Maybe We can get together a ride some. Can I get in on a weekend pass? One last comment, from what I have learned so far with all of the rules and Reg's here in OH it seems to put a damper on everyone's enthusiasm for riding around here. Is my perception correct?

Going back and reading some of the prior postings is getting me depressed about living here in OH, way too many reg's. I think when I get ready to ride I'm going to head back to KY, NO TITLES, NO STATE REGISTRATION, NO INSURANCE just you, your bike and some good friends. Has anyone been to Daniel Boone National Forrest in KY? I know for some it might be too far to drive. What about Indiana or West Virginia? I don't mind driving a few hours on a friday and riding all day Saturday if other riders are up for it.

Dave it's not as bad as it sounds. You need a permit to ride state forest here in Ohio. It cost 8.00 for 3 years. You'll need a wayne permit to ride at wayne. It cost 5.00 per day or 25.00 per year.They keep something loke 80% of the money here to help pay for trail maint, and improvements. You need to check with your local DMV to see what you need to get a title. Hatfield McCoy in WVa is about 4 hrs away and cost 15.00 aday to ride. Well worth it.
gwcrim this was the worst weekend to go to wayne with out a permit.

From what I understand so far, here's the steps to get legal on a bike that is "virgin".

1- VIN Inspection (probably from a bike shop)
2- Notarized sales receipt (GEEZE!)
3- Then you get a title at the court house
4- Get insurance (crock of sh!t)
5- Then you get a registration and Ohio sticker at the BMV

That gets you onto State land. Probably lightens your wallet by $150. I'm just guessing though.

At Wayne "National" Forest, you need another "National" Forest permit.

I 'spose I'll be jumping through these hoops in the coming weeks. I'll post all the costs and hassles.

Since 1999 all bikes come with a title, so it's just a matter of registration and insurance. My bike is an out of state 1989 so it's totally unknown.

Super Dave,  the key to riding OH is, get your permits, and don't go to Wayne on a Holday weekend, and don't ride the gravel roads. Also if you know where to ride at Wayne you can find smaller trials with less traffic....

At Wayne National Forest - When you  are on the gravel roads you are riding on public state and county roads and can get a ticket for operating an OHV on such even if you do have your title, OH sticker & WNF sticker.  You  must have a bike with a license plate to ride on these roads.  Stay off of them.

Ask SPD about insurance.

Thanks everyone, I'm going to try to attack Ohio government this week and get legal. I'll be out of town this weekend and it will probably take some time to get all of this paperwork done. Maybe we can ride the weekend of the 19th or 26th, just pick a spot and I'll be there. I look forward to riding with you guys :thumb:

I have a $1500 bike. It's my first one in over 20 yrs. Insuring it didn't even cross my mind. Call me old fashioned.

Still, my half of the ticket and the $5 pass was less than a lift ticket at the slopes. But then my skis didn't cost me $1500. Not to mention $6K.

As I said before, I understand if your gonna ride on The Man's Land, you have to play by The Man's Rules. But there's a little bit of old hippy in me that doesn't like The Man or his Rules on land use.

As for the attendance..... We were surprised at the lack of people there at WNF for a beautiful holiday weekend. We were the only ones in P4 parking lot.

Man, sorry, but all I can say to all this is...WTF?

I grew up in SEO -- I guess I'm not saying exactly where now because I don't want "the man" to come by and shut us all down -- but we rode everywhere and never had any issues...on the roads, trails, into town, etc. Want to visit the folks on the next ridge? Just hop on the bike and take the road or woods, whatever you're up for. It was kind of like living in a big riding park.

Granted, that was 15 years ago, but I still go down two to three times each year and from what I can tell it's even less restrictive now because some of the old farmers who would threaten to shoot you for ridin' on their land have passed to those old hunting grounds in the sky. Now, I worry more about riding into a booby trapped "garden" than getting busted by the cops.

About Wayne, most of my trips down there we do a ride or two at the Dorr Run area. We never get hassled. I just stop by The Crossroads, get my $5 pass and go ride. I don't know what you're talking about with receipts, insurance, etc. And I've never been checked when out on the trails, so I suppose you could say I even could have been stiffing them all these times. Hell, last time a buddy didn't have his driver's liscense and he just kind of sweet talked the lady. More illustrative, the guys from down there who I ride with go to Wayne all the time, and I don't think they have a spark arrestor among them. The last ride, one was riding wheelies down the road and a ranger went by. He didn't say anything.

The last time I was down was about two months ago. I'm going down again on the 19th. I guess I'll see then if anything has changed since.

I guess if you're riding on the roads you technically could need all that stuff -- and I can kind of see that because they can't let cars get away with it and they can't play favorites and all that -- but why the heck would you go to a big honkin' trail system and ride on the adjacent gravel roads?

As for no crowds at Wayne, which I'd consider a plus myself, except for one trip to the somewhat isolated Long Ridge trailhead on a Thursday when we had the whole place to ourselves, Wayne has always been pretty darn crowded when I've gone there, much moreso than Hatfield-McCoy, for comparison.

Speaking of H&M, I agree that Hatfield-McCoy is a great time. We go to the Bear Wallow trailhead. However, please realize thars rocks in dem thar hills! If you're going to wander off the green trails (and if you're not, you really won't see anything special anyhow), you will ride in a lot of rocks, especially on the black trails. If you want a great ride, do a loop that includes the longer single track section, #183 or #185 (I can't remember exactly but you can't miss it on the map).

Every holiday weekend you can expect to see rangers at Wayne. I've never had them ask for insurance or registration. The only look for the apv sticker and wayne pass. They use some of the road to connect the trails. If they did'nt have that law you'ld have all kind of accidents. You know the big time racers that only want to race up and down the road or parking lot then tell you how fast they are. I watched some punk get a ticket one weekend. The ranger caught him on the road. No apv sticker,no wayne permit and on the road. The ranger was only going to ticket him for no wayne permit until he started running his mouth. Then he got 3 tickets.

I must admit, on my several trips down the last few years, I don't think any has been on a holiday weekend, so that's probably why I'm not seeing it.

As for the multiple tickets, considering the "altered states" some of my buddies from down there ride in, they'd get a lot more than three.

Technically speaking now -- assuming it's a holiday weekend, the rangers are out, blah, blah -- can you ride at night at that place, if you have a light obviously?

Some buddies who are coming down with me on the 19th will be camping there. They'll have bikes and quads and might want to go out and do stupid quad rider stuff in the middle of the night or something.

Are you sure there will be points? Thank goodness my buddy took the ticket. My license sure doesn't need the extra baggage. :eek:

I think the 'one ticket' deal was his way of letting us off easy. I mean we really could have out run him on his little kwad. But we sat there like good sheep.... er.... law abiding citizens. :whiner:

Yep. 2 points and 80.00 fine. For riding on the road.
