We weren't riding on the road. I really hope this doesn't add points to his license. But better him than me!

Well I was wrong about cops only being at Wayne on holidays. I rode this past Friday, a Sheriff came about 5 pm to see stickers and Wayne permits. I had no problems, and he seemed to be an o.k. guy. He came drove by again at 10 pm and busted a quad riding the road.

I was wrong, too. Maybe I should have knocked on wood or something when I posted all that good crap about Wayne earlier.

A buddy, along with about a dozen other riders, was stopped for no reason at Wayne on Saturday. He, along with the other guys, was detained for almost an hour while the deputy sheriff called in their bike VINs and drivers licenses for outstanding warrants. I consider that tantamount to a cop standing on a street corner and holding everyone who walks by until they check out.

I live in Illinois, so riding at Wayne is an option for me. I will not be going back. When it comes to riding around my folk's place, Hatfield-McCoy in West Virginia will get all of my Illinois dollars.

I'm sorry to hear about that James. I've forwarded this to the Wayne National Forest Headquarters and hope to get a response. There's definitely a problem with the current system. The trail pass is a no brainer, but this APV permit thing is out of control. I have a Motorcycle title, clear and in my name, and I tried to buy an APV pass and they won't sell it to me with this title!! So I'm supposed to put a street license on a bike that's FAR from Street legal??? I also sent this matter to the Headquarters.

We rode there 6 hours yesterday and it was Awesome!!

Thanks, Bill. I have a pile of letters here addressed to Governor Taft and Ohio and U.S. Congressmen and Senators about this. I'll add the Wayne people to the list.

What gets me is that my buddy, or any one else getting harassed, wasn't doing anything when they were stopped -- just riding and having a good old time burning up the 94 octane they just purchased in Nelsonville; thinking about the Sonic burger they were going to buy on the way home; digesting the Red Bull, Gatorade and potato chips bought at the Crossroads; enjoying the Wayne National Forest permit they just traded some cold hard cash for that morning; and taking mental notes so they could better plan their next trip for bolstering the local economy.

To hell with their local economy. They can keep their trails. There are alternatives.

James,

Maybe you and your friends should try riding Perry State park. It's not as big as Wayne but you'll have a much better experience. It will also be about the same drive. XR-MAN or SPD can give you some good info on Perry. They've been there a few times. All I can tell you is that there are some pretty nice hill climbs and plenty of places to loop your bike out.

Thanks, dead. Even though I grew up riding in southern Ohio, I've never been to Perry. I think the next few times I'll be going to Hatfield, though. The new Waterways trailhead is just south of Charleston, and although I've heard it's quite a bit easier than Bear Wallow, for comparison, so is Wayne. And I still haven't been to Rockhouse, and there are a few marked trails at Bear Wallow I haven't seen yet. With them adding more to Hatfield all the time, I figure wild, wonderful West Virginia has me covered. It's nice when those you give your money to actually act like they appreciate it.

Sorry to hear about your friends getting detained. BUT after having my bikes stolen I'm kinda for it. There's been a ton of bikes stolen around columbus this year. Something needs to be done about it. Look at firemedic, his bike was stolen sunday nite and two days later his neighbor saw it at Wayne.

The guy who was detained had two bikes stolen last year (Chicago). He's not for it. Think about it. Just because cars get stolen, you don't stop everyone driving down the highway and hold them for an hour. The bike or rider should match a description or, at the very least, the guy getting stopped should be doing something illegal in the first place to justify it. The situation isn't comparable to drunk driving checkpoints that are designed to prevent accidents and deaths.

This isn't right: "You're riding a dirt bike, so you must be a thief. Sit here you guilty ******* until I prove you're innocent, and if you move I'm cuffing you."

The bad part is, it will get worse, not better. The more people there are on any public property, the amount of "law enforment" increases.

10 years ago there were no cops at Wayne, also almost no Quads, you could ride on the roads no problem, there we more areas to park and camp.

Now, since everyone and there brother has a quad, there are a lot more cops. The only solution is more riding areas, but it's going to have to be private property if it's in OH. We don't have the land avalible they have out west.

I spent a week in Idaho mountains, drove a 4x4 blazer 700 miles on Natl.Forest roads/trails. It was awesome, I saw less than 20 people all week.

But places like that don't have the jobs we do in OH. You can't have it all.

What's funny is I've generally said the same thing about the Chicago area vs. Ohio. That is, Ohio has the riding spots we don't, but not the jobs.

You want tight, try sharing a 200 acre private park with 200 four wheelers and paying $20 for the privilege of doing so.

In some parts of the country, if you want to go on a fresh, long trail ride, you have to enter an enduro. If you want to ride MX, you enter a race. There's no other local option.

As for another regional option, Michigan looks promising. I haven't tried up there yet.

I do ride enduros and dual sport so I can ride areas that are not normally open to public. Chillicothe has one this Sunday.
Michigan has great riding, but most is far north, the lower places are mostly flat and all sand.
