How often should you change the oil and clean the air filter? The xr400 manual says change oil every 500 miles my mechanic says every other ride or every 2 tanks of gas. Air filter after every ride. I live in NM where it is pretty dusty.

If you want to be super-safe, go with what your mechanic says. I change the oil in my 426 after every 1-1/2 to 2 tanks of gas, and clean the oil filter (micro-mesh metal screen type) every two oil changes. I do the "look test" on the air filter-take a look at it and see how dirty it is. In dusty conditions, you'd be surprised at how quick that thing will load up. On damp days, though, yo may not get much dirt at all on the air filter. Occasionally I get 3-4 rides between cleanings. Depends on how badly I get roosted! The XR's are tanks, solid and reliable, but keeping fresh oil in the engine is just added insurance for long life of the motor and internals in my opinion.
