oil change???

Hey i was wondering if any 1 could help me out im new to crossers and have just purchased a KX 250 98 :)(which i swapped for a q plated dtr125) model and when i went to look at the cluthch plates, i was undoing the bolts on the casing when(it was like oil mixed with water+dirt)started coming out.Is this because ive been jet washing it and not covering the air filter and water simpy got throught. And shuld i just drain the gear box oil and raplace it with sum fresh oil or will i have to take the bike apt and giv it a proper clean. :think: I want to keep the bike in best condition as i can and seen as i dont kno much this seems like a good place to start. cheers guys :aj:

The oil should not be gritty. if you have aluminum plates your oil will be a gray color and it will be milky if water got into it. I wouldn't use anything other than a hose to wash it. Good luck

:yikes: its more of a grey colour i have put some new oil in it then drined tht and put some new oil in it again. Do u think i shuld open the sump nut and flush it out with water(it wasnt gritty just grey colour :cool: cheers buddy

Holy crap NO!

Do NOT put water in the tranny!

If you want to flush it, fill it with oil, run it a bit, and change it again. Never, EVER, put anything but a lubricant in your tranny.

Water getting into the engine through the carb will not get into the tranny.....they are separated [or at least, they should be] in a two-stroke engine. As previously stated.....change the oil, run the bike, change the oil, run the bike.....repeat until oil stays clean.....then still change it often. I change mine every second ride.

You say that you just bought the bike....perhaps the previous owner did not change the oil very often.

no the previos owner abused the bike a bit, i donthink he ever changed the oil it was a really grey dark mirky clour i have put2 loads of engine oil thru it. Im new to the bikes, :bang: so were exactly is the trannie im talking about the only hole there is i drined 2 loads of oil through it (500 ml)(is this the correct measurments im juts goin by how much was in it last) and it seems to b getting clearer :) but i need to kno how much 2 put in my dtr was 750 ml wen i drined this kx it had 500 ml(just under 550)any info will b a good help :cool:

The only place you can put oil on a KX is the tranny. Engine oil gets mixed in the gasoline.

As for how much, I don't know for sure but I'm 99% positive it is more than 500ml.

cheers m8 i think its 750ml tht wat it was on my dtr 125, so im not sure. (2 stroke in with the petrol i kno tht lol) but if any 1 knows the correct amout of gear box oil, it wuld b much appreciated :cool: oh and i took the clutch cover of to check it out and evert things in good condition the gasket was also in good condition but i was wondering does it have to b tightned up with a torque wrench :ohmy:

You have to put enough oil in the tranny to fill half of the inspection window on the clutch cover. Once the oil is to the half way mark then start the bike for a minute or so and recheck it. It should be lower. Fill the oil back to the halfway point on the window.

If you are concerned about contaminants in the oil, just run your bike until the engine is hot (and tranny) and then drain the oil while it is hot. Just to be clear do not use "engine oil"! You must use approved tranny oil for your bike. It sounds like you need to get a maintenance manual and study it.

I wouldn't recommend using high pressure to wash your bike because it breaks the seals down and will damage your bike. Just use a garden hose and some elbow grease.

Don't take this wrong; but from reading your other posts and your stated fact you are new to off-road bikes; you REALLY need to get the service manual. It has all the directions, torque specs for bolts etc; type and amounts of fluids, maintenance tasks.

You can really screw the bike up by messing with things and not having the manual. :nod:

yo dude this"engine oil" is "gearbox oil" is bought from a kawasaki shop and that what they give me. Thanks for the advice im ordering a manual soon. Is trannie and emerican term or is this wat its called im ffom the uk and its called gear box oil :cool: cheers for the advice im guna go try it now ill let u kno how it goes :aj:

Most dirtbikes spec 10w40 engine oil for the transmission.

Yea, tranny is a slang term used here for transmission. I use Bel-Ray 80 wt Gearbox oil (for transmissions) but there are a number of alternatives. My last Kawasaki was an '89 KX-500 so I am not sure what newer ones call for; but even in my '06 YZ250 it states you can use motor oil like 20W-50 as long as it doesn't have friction modifiers that could hurt the clutch.

On the right side of the engine....above the clutch cover [round cover] there is a black plug.....that's the fill hole....the drain plug is on the bottom of the engine. As others have stated....get the bike good and hot....then drain the oil....refill with recommended oil [10w30 is recommended....I use ATF] until you see oil in the sight glass on the clutch cover. It should take a little over 800 mls [just under a quart]. Repeat the process and keep doing it until it stays reasonably clean.

cheers buddy, sorted oil is much clearer now ive drained it a few times :) . Any idea on whats making the bike not band properly in 4th gear its as if petrol doesnt get through like it sputters then just badns then keeps sputtering. im thinkin it could b the reed valve, but if u kno wat it might be id much appreciate it :cool:

If the previous owner did not maintain the bike very well....you might want to take apart the carb and give it a good cleaning....you will then be able to remove and inspect the reed valve as well.....change the spark plug too.....maybe perform a compression test to make sure that's OK....and make sure that you have fresh petrol in the tank.....properly mixed with a quality, synthetic, 2-stroke oil at 40:1.

I almost forgot.....clean the air filter.

ohh god this guy is having a hard enough time doing what he has done all ready. And now your gonna tell him to take apart the carb? chances are the carb is pretty clean and working as it should This bike aint that old. If it jumps out of 4th when you get on the gas but it shows no sign of this problem in any other gear then your dogs on 4th gear are rounded off and it will need major work. It would be a smart move to have someone who knows what they are doing fix this problem for you.

He didn't say that it jumps out of 4th....he said that it runs like crap in 4th [and presumably 5th as well].

However, you may be correct that cleaning the carb may be beyond his skill level.

Yeah well when he said Only 4th does this and no other gear does this i started to ignore his comments on how it was acting in this gear due to his terms are skechy at best. but yeah wish him best of luck.
If 5th gear is doing it too i would start to think its a spark problem and a heavy load makes it show its A55.
