old vs newer

is there a difference in speed between a stock 99 or stock 03 250 I found good deals on both years with both yz's and kx's.im looking to start racing. I also found a 99kx250 with after market suspensin full pro circuit exhaust fresh top and bottom end, vforce reeds and some other minor things. Ould that be better then buying a stock 03 yz250 if I'm looking to start racing?

all things equal, i will go in the newer one for racing... while it may seem the bikes are the same, sometimes they can be quite different. also the parts are more available and most of the times cheaper...
i would buy stock and work from there.

I look at condition rather than age. There's very little difference in the bikes themselves, so the one that is better maintained or lower hours is usually the better buy. For instance, I have a friend that rides yz450's, he buys them new, rides them for about 2 years doing NO maintenance, and then trades them in. I feel sorry for whoever buys his old bikes.
