Good Morning
How do you know when its time to decarbonize?
Is this something that can be done by a newbie?
And would I be opening up a can of troubles since it
is a 1985? (not knowing what needs replacing).

I am asking because my bike smokes like mad,
But it runs good. I am not gonna mess with jetting
untill it warms up (cmon spring).

Also, if anyone in NJ is experienced with this
and wants to teach a newbie and make a few bucks,
Let me know. I am in Central New Jersey.
Thanks all for any advice

You can do inspections of the cylinder through the ports. It's usually easiest to pull the exhaust, but if you need to see the intake side, you can pull the carb and reeds as well.

This all sounds great, but i have never opened up a motor.
I am going to repack the after market silencer.
I will attempt to clean out the exhaust.
But as far as cleaning the ports and replacing rings,
I am lost. I do have the Klymers manual.
Can someone explain ports and rings?

Again, if anyone is in NJ and wants to make a few bucks
and teach me. It would be super.

I really do want to learn this procedure
I enjoy working on my bikes.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Scott

Don't open the motor, just remove the expansion chamber and you will be able to see inside of the cylinder. You can look and see if there is excessive carbon build-up.

ok, i finally repacked the silencer
and pulled off the expansion chamber.
There was about 3/4 of a cup of oil
that i poured out.
The exhaust port looked clean (no build up)

I started to play with the air screw on the carb.
I followed the tips on adjusting the air screw.
After the bike was warmed up, i closed the airscrew
and backed it out a 1/2 turn. started the bike and the rpms
were scary high.

I'd say that the airscrew is about 7 to 8 complete turns
out to get at a good idle.

Does this explain why i might be smoking like mad?

I am using Belray Synthetic, i was mixing at 32:1
after ckeaning the exhaust and replacing the packing
I am now mixing at 40:1.

Any Advice?

7 to 8 turns out on the airscrew to get a good idle means the pilot is too small. I am wondering if you are thinking of the idle speed screw, rather than the airscrew. Normal airscrew settings are less than 3 turns out.

I only have the 1 adjustment screw.
I think your right, it is called idle screw.

I have the 1985 kdx200 with the Mikuni VM32SS carb.

So i don't have an Air Screw?

All im after is a little less smoke.

Thanks

That carb just has an idle screw and no air screw.

What is the condition of the air filter?

Which spark plug are you running?

Have you taken the carburetor out and cleaned it?

Have you checked the jets to see if they are stock?

Are you sure that the carburetor's float valve is working properly?

Have you checked the carburetor float height?

Are you sure that the fuel tank's petcock is shutting off properly?

I am wondering if your fuel system is allowing too much fuel into the carburetor. Beyond that, I would wonder about worn rings.

How many kicks does it take to crank when cold? How many kicks does it take after it is already warm?

Air filter is in great condition
The standard NGK B9 something
Carb is clean as a whistle with stock jets.
Not 100% sure about the float valve.
It was stuck when i bought the bike.
Also not sure about float height. (thats next on my list)
Petcock had all gaskets replaced and works great.

When cold starts in 2 to 3 kicks
when hot starts in 1 to 3 kicks.
(keep in mind it is a 1985)

Thanks
