Regreasing Steering Stem & pro taper installation

I was trying today to loosen the 23mm bolt on the top clamp underneath my handlebars. I was using a torque wrench and giving it everything I had with the front wheel stabilized between my feet. Now, I have to say I am pretty mechanically illiterate, but I have a few magazines giving me general instruction. What is the trick to this? Also, I am trying to put pro-tapers on and have new scotts bar clamps. When I tried to loosen the bolt for the stock clamps that is located underneath, the bottom half of the clamp
would just twist. I could not for the life of me get it to loosen even after reinstalling the bars in an effort to immobilize the clamps from moving. No luck. I am trying to save myself from the labor costs of a shop. Please any advice would be appreciated!

First and most important..Have a good set of tools, dont do anything unless you have at least a rather expensive tool set otherwise you will do a whole lot of damage. And don't use standard sockets and wrences on mm bolts.

As for your question. only thing I can say is "Damn Rubber". Monkey wrenches work great for this thing.

Hi Guys, I'm an old guy who's new to this forum.

When I first got my RM, the head bearings were shot. The "top of the head" bolt was really stuborn. So,

1) Take off handle bars (bet your allready did)
2) Only correct size MM socket should be used.
3) I had friend hold bike, and yanked with a 30" long breaker bar till we both needed some beer.
4) Oh, well, get out IMPACT WRENCH; careful application of impact wrench, and it came off.


SO when all else fails, use air driven impact wrench (start low setting and work up till it co-operates).
