Is there any way to get the stock silencer repacked?, well to tell you the truth, what i really want to do is take ou thge screen that makes it a spark arrestor. Is there any way do do this? mine is a 2003 stock silencer THANX
Using a torch, cutoff tool or air chisel slice the oem cannister open. Remove all the internal chambers, tubes and stuff (you won't find any packing to mess with). Then pack it full of an approved packing material.
Weld the thing back together.
THEN, when you find that it doesn't work at all, go buy yourself a power core, or other brand silencer of your choice. MX doesn't require a spark arrester, so you don't have to worry about getting one.
The oem s/a is not a serviceable unit....meaning you don't DO anything (like repack) to it. Remove the drain bolt (that would be on the bottom of the cannister?) and drain the goop out of it from time to time, and you're all set.
so, this will not work at all? the dude I talked to at motoworld racing said that all I have to do is remove the screen thing that makes it a spark arrestor. I knwo you dont have to buy one for motocross, But i wanted one.
Although we're back to seeing a KDX being used for a purpose not intended...even after being informed of the deficiencies  ...this thread did open up a question I have.
I installed a used PC pipe on my '00 200 a few days ago. Bike runs great. I like it. :yeehaw: I'm looking forward to picking up an FMF torque as well, for comparison and curiousity.
The PC pipe came with a PC silencer in great condition. I installed the pipe, but left the OEM silencer on the bike. It may be heavy, but that won't really affect my riding at my (low) skill level. I like the fact that it's quiet. I'm not a fan of a screaming aftermarket exhaust. I've been wondering, though, how long the stock silencer will be usable.
I come from street bikes. I know OEM exhausts on those bikes use baffles, tubes, and other mechanical means to manipulate and "soften" the exhaust waves/pulses/noise. That's why they're so quiet, but so heavy. Aftermarket street exhausts normally consist of a straight perforated pipe surrounded by packing. These range from "louder than stock" to "holy crap that's annoying (D&D brand). :flame: Loud, but light.
My concern has been "How long before the stock KDX silencer gets 'clogged up' by spooge, and needs 'repacked'?" I've been watching auction sites for used, good condition KDX OEM silencers specifically to address this question.
Is my concern completely a non-issue? If I understand CC's post above, the stock KDX silencer is similar to a street bike silencer...no packing, all tubes and wave manipulation. Is it a fair assumption that this silencer should last indefinitely, barring crash damage? Will periodically draining the spooge via the bolt keep the silencer in working condition?
If this is the case, it would be great news to me. Instead of worrying about buying used silencers every so often, I'll just have to remember to drain mine. :thumb: Clarification on this issue would be most appreciated.
What year/model is your KDX? I have an early 90's -200 and the stock silencer works well and IS servicable. In fact, if you have the same style silencer (the long tube with three screws at the end) I can tell you how to modify it so it works even better.
For the love of pete, KDXfreestyle... PLEASE sell your bike now while it's still worth good money and buy a nice 2001 or so KX125. It will be more poweful, lighter, and perfectly suited for motocross. It will already have the MX style plastic you've asked about a million times. It will already have the KX forks. It will come right from the factory with no spark arrestor. It won't look retarded on an MX track with the headlight on.
KDXFreestyle, you just don't get it, do you? Several people have already explained in this thread that there is nothing you can do to the stock silencer. No repacking, no S/A removal(why the heck would you do that, anyway :| ) etc... The only way to get a non-S/A unit is to buy an aftermarke one.
I'm telling you, if you put your KDX back stock, you could easily sell it for $3200 or better. You could buy a very nice '01 KX125 for $2900 and still have money left over to mod it. I'm just trying to help here.
You can shorten the stock unit and open it up a little. I will be repacking it in the next few days and while doing so I'll take some photo's and post the inner working of the mod.
reworking the stock '89-94 silencer is simple, when you take the cannister apart there will be two twisted looking tubes in the front of it that restrict the flow, simply cut these and insert a piece of perforated tubing the make up the difference, really works nicely and you still have a quiet forrestry approved spark arresting muffler (why anyone would want to make a bike loud and obmoxious is beyond me).
I have a modified stocker off my '93 if you'd be interested, it could use a repacking but otherwise in excellent shape.
the arrows mark where to make the cuts, leave enough for the new perforated tubing to slide on so it centers itself, there are two ways to complete it, either tack weld the new tubing to the ends or get two long pieces of all thread to hold the two ends together, put a little packing in around the new tubing and you're set!
kdx FREESTYLE YES THE STOCK SILENCER IS QUITE, BUT ONCE U MESS WITH IT IT WILL NEVER BE THE SAME--SO DON'T MESS WITH IT---U WOULD NOT GET MUCH MORE PERFORMANCE OUT OF IT--GO AFTERMARKET---BY THE WAY U THINK JUST LIKE ME
I think it makes it just about as good as an aftermarket without the expense, since the stocker is fairly light. On mine with an FMF pipe could you definitely tell a difference, it let the bike rev a bit more and it ran a little cleaner.
