I have a 2000 RM125 and I noticed after a ride that the carbureator leaks gas whenever I turn the gas petcock on. The gas just pours out of the overflow tube from the bottom of the bowl. I just got my bike up and running and it was sitting for half a year after an engine rebuild from riding it without oil. I took off the bowl and it looks clean. Now the gas leaking has become worse and it comes out of more overflow tubes. Anybody have an idea what could be wrong with the carb?

Sounds like the float is sticking, I would tear down the carburator, clean and inspect all the parts, make sure the float is not leaking fuel inside. Once you do this is should be fine, if it sat for such a long time something is not right, clean, inspect and re-assemble and you shold be fine. This would be a good time to remove the air box and give it a cleaning too. IMO

I had this happen on my '02 after emptying the tank and carb - switched to race fuel. I guess the fact that I ran almost all the gas out of the carb caused whatever dirt was in there to make the float stick. When I took the carb apart I discovered that the slow jet was completely clogged - had to be blown out with compressed air to get it clear.

there is something wrong with the floats - i had a friend with 01 yz250 that had the same problem - he cleaned the carb many times and could not fix - he took it ot our friend who works on motorcycles - he cleaned it many times and still could not fix it - he cleaned it one more time and found the trash in there causing it - that was last year - the bike is still running good, not spilling out any gas

I cleaned out the carb with carb spray and compressed air and it was the tiniest piece of dirt that was clogging the float needle. I was thinking of putting a small particle filter on the fuel line to prevent junk from getting in the carb, but i'm not sure if this would work with a 2 stroke b/c of the mixed gas. Anybody have any opinions?

I use an inline fuel filter on all of my bikes. It's clear so you can see the screen with a glance, and I do find dirt in it and clean it out periodically. Trash can get into your fuel easily when you open the cap or through the vent, and even through the carb vent tubes. And there's all sorts of garbage floating around in gas station fuel tanks. If you run pump gas, I feel that a filter is mandatory.

Yea I just added one to my bike , 2$ is cheap insurance against a plugged carb. Its clear so you can acctually tell when the fuel is on , I forget sometimes.

No it won't. They are used on all kinds of 2 stroke equipment, to keep trash out of the carb, with no effects on lube. The oil passes right through. Your bike already has a filter in the tank, but adding an inline one is never a bad idea.
