what are you yz125 riders running your sag at? I'm just curious, because I keep hearing that this very important with this bike to get it to handle right. I haven't even rode the bike yet, but I always seem to struggle with getting my suspension dialed in right. I am a novice mxer and weigh 165lbs., do you think 100mm is good for my weight?

Do you have an 05 yz125? My friend helped me set it at 100mm, but when we checked static sag it was at 41mm, something doesn't sound right. Do any of you guys know what static sag should be? We are going to start over again to see what we come up with. If anyone has anything to add it would be greatly appreiated.

Static sag for the most part should be around the 15 - 25 mm range. If you set the sag corectly and the static sag is over 25mm , the spring is too stiff for the rider . if under the 10 -15mm mark the spring is too soft .
I do not own one , just work on them for the racers.

I doesn't seem logical that my shock spring is to stiff considering my weight fluctuates between 165-170lbs. I am starting to think that the guy who is helping me with setting the sag is measuring wrong. Setting up suspension is kind of new to me, I always seem to struggle with this stuff, I guess it will come with time.

This is the procedure on how we are measuring the sag. We have the bike on the stand with rear wheel off the ground, then we measure. Next, I sat down on the bike in a neutral position with my feet barely touching the floor to keep balance and we measure again. Now we take the two measurements and subtract and that is how we are getting the sag reading.

For startic sag, we pull up on the rear fender as far as it will go and measure, the we let the bike fall under it's own weight and measure, the subtract to get static sag.

Doe these procedure sound correct?

I weigh about the same and need to get a softer spring to get good sag numbers-alot of people just set it to 100mm and dont bother.

I used a 4.5 on the 04 rm125 and a 4.7 on the 05 rmz250.

marcus, my friend told me that one turn on the spring is 3mm, is he right? I am starting to belive that he really doesn't know what he is talking about, but he has been involved with motocross racing much longer than I have. We are supposed to check everything again tomorrow.

Well, we rechecked the sag again today and got totally different numbers. We thought it was set at 100mm but it actually was at 113mm somehow. It could have been due to a number of factors, but first I bounced up and down on the bike to remove stiction, Then I stood up on the pegs and had my dad hold the bike for me to stabilize it while my friend took the readings. I think I am at 102mm on the sag and static sag is at 32mm.

I also rode the bike for the first time today. I really like the bike a lot, but sometimes on flat turns with no berms or ruts it feels like it want to wash or tuck under. Do you guys think more spring preload maybe?

I also had some problems with the static sag on my 05 YZ 125 once I had it resprung and revalved to my weight.

I set the race sag at 106mm and it gave me a static sag of 45mm. I tried it out though and loved the way it handled. The next time it was in to my local engine and suspension shop they changed it so my sag would be around 98mm to make the static sag a little closer. I havent rechecked the numbers yet and havent had it out since the sag was changed from 106mm.

DEX, how much do you weigh? I think the scale I have been using all along is off, and I might be closer to 175lbs. Other that setting the sag, I didn't adjust any of the clickers on the bike yesterday. The track that I was at was a sx type track that was exremely rough and in terrible condition, I was pretty much just there to break the bike in. As far as the bike wanting to wash out in flat turns, I don't know what to do to fix it.
