Need a little help fromthe KDXperts!

Elsie is a soon to be 20 year old KDX, bone stock, pristine condition. Still has original stickers on the gas tank!

Twice recently, one finger of the spring that returns the shifter to 'the middle' has popped over the um perch thingy rendering it useless. When this happens, I can shift all day between 2nd and 3rd, but if I need to go up 2 gears in a row, or down 2 gears in a row, I have to gently nudge the lever back to the middle before shifting again.

If by chance you have the '83-88 Clymer manual, the spring is shown on pages 145-146, photos 110, 112, 118.

I can now remove the clutch cover and use needle nose pliers to put the spring back in place and put it all back together in about 30-45 minutes here at the house, but would rather not attempt it out on the trail.

The spring is strong. The lip/edge on the perch seems to be fine.

Has anyone experienced this? What would make the spring jump over like this? Any advice or ideas would be welcome.

Thanks
David
