Indeed! I need to follow Lori and Dave and get some new equipment. After living for 10 years in flatland country my equipment is seriously outdated. I've been renting the demo packages for the past five seasons. Those top-of-the-line Salomon's I rented last year were shaweet. I just don't know if I can justify $1k for skis and bindings to Mrs. Woods, seeing as how she will be sitting out this season.

Woodsrider-Why not go to a ski swap? I have friends who have gotton one year old equipment for a few hundred clams. Good stuff too. Just don't skimp on the boots.
Last year, the airlines bought me 1000 dollars worth of skiis because they lost them on a trip to Utah and I needed to ski. Now I have 2 sets of identical skiis. Sweet deal.

To whomever said it, I ride like my mom skiis too! I ski like the local experts ride. Go figure, I wish I could swap the skills each season so I was great at each!

Downhill NE spodefest sounds like a cool idea!

Woods--

Great suggestion by Kawie on the Ski Swap-- check it out now, as this is the time of year that they have them. Some of the ski hills will also sell the last year's models demo packages that you rented-- ask around.

Yeah, I know all about the closeout specials and last seasons demos. Either way it's still a financial problem. With a little one on the way, my sources of disposable income have dried up. I can probably use one set of skis that I have, but I'll definitely need new boots. Better find something to sell.

Kawie, don't take this the wrong way, but I've got bindings that are older than you... and the knees to prove it. :scream:

If you would like, I can keep you on the top of the list for my one year old Rossi bandit XX's. They are is really good condition and since the airlines got me new ones, I may think about selling them to recover some of the cost of my Line skiboards.

I've been snowboarding for 13 years (this winter will be the 13th). Its funny to see it from its inception and watch it now. I remember getting hassled everytime I stepped foot on the mountain. Maybe because there was me and about 1 other person on a board. Thats when no matter who you saw, if they were on a board you went up to them , talked a bit, and ended up riding all day together. Now, its completely different, 50% of the traffic on the local hills are snowboards, everyone seems to do it, and it has gotten WAY to popular in my opinion.

Ah well, atleast I can find some oldtimers and talk about the old ELAN boards or the Burton Elite with the swallow tail....

Anyone else here get to see the change in snowboarding attitudes? For a long time they were the enemy in many skiers eyes. I've always gone with at least one snowboarder. Seems like many skiers worry about their dominance on the slopes.....Who cares? Skiis aren't going anywhere, and I really like watching how boarders and skiiers attack similar sections differently. Kinda like watching 2 strokes and 4 strokes tackle the same section of trail.

Here in southeren Indiana we may get snow or we may not....kinda just below the snow line. I learned to ski in Vermont when I was in the Army.

We only have one ski are here and they usually have to make the snow once it gets cold enough. The ski area is Paoli Peaks which is BTW...the home of this years 2nd annual MAMMOUTH EAST MOTOCROSS!

Last year the first Mammouth East was a big success and this year should be even better...CLICK HERE TO CHECK IT OUT!

Lori , Thats the Snow Expo and Winter Sports Show at the South Mall in down town Albany ( sorry ) .It is NOT a shopping mall . It is more of an office and convention center complex . It also houses the NY State Museum of Natural History .
The Expo is an annual event that features Down hill sports as well as Snowmobile and some hunting . They have demos ,new and used equipment sales ,Warren Miller movies , and reps from Eastern resorts . They also have many door prizes .
The energy levels are always high , and it is a good warm up for the season , it always gets my ski jones kicked into 2nd gear.:)

eeek!! Cold White stuff?!! :scream: I don't know what happened. The skiing/snowboarding gods who hand out the skill must have run out by the time they got to me. My bother snowboards and my sister is an excellent skier. I was peer pressured into trying it twice, both times ending in disaster! I'm surprised both ski resorts didn't throw me off the mountain for being a hazard! The most embarassing was my first and only time getting on a lift. My pole got stuck in the fence while I was in line and I went down taking out nearly half the line in a domino effect, then I almost knock myself out when the lift came around, dropped my pole only to have it handed to me at the top by a cute guy AFTER a fell off the lift and rolled down the little slope. :o I held more 'yard sales' on that mountain than on your average Sunday afternoon in the burbs! Can you saaaay uncoordinated?!! :(
Nope, not for me. I may not be very successful at it in my everyday life but I try to avoid public humiliation at any cost!
Here's a cool pic of my bro though. :) Click Here

Ok, I just found out that my local mountain (Big White) just made the decision to open this weekend!!! It will be the first major ski resort in N. America to open, and the erliest opening since 1975 for that resort. Its kinda stupid though their just opening 1 lift and 1 run, so I dont think I will be driving for an hour to do the same run all day. I think Ill wait till we get a little more snow.
BTW their opening with only 43cm base!

Fatty_k, that's just stupid to open with that little snow. Red Mountain should be open in another month or so.

Ya, it is stupid. I think their doing it just so they can say their the first open and because we had such a bad season last year and didnt open till like end of december. I think they want to show people that it is going to be a good season.
Im crossing my fingers.

YZEATER, Deer Valley is overrated. Stein's is over priced. I worked in Park City at both Stein's and Park City ticket office. Deer Valley is really small. Wolf Mountain is not bad. But, if you want some really killer Utah skiing, try Alta, Snowbird, Brighton in the Cottonwood canyons of Salt Lake. But, for some of the best skiing without the "tourist trap" you should go north of Salt Lake to Ogden then go up, up, up to Snow Basin or Powder Mtn. Snow Basin is my personal fav. Lots of area. Lots of Black Diamond and double black. Lots of altitude. Not a lot of crowds. Most days there is no wait on lift lines. Of course, you don't have the village life like in Park City, but good food and bars can be found in Ogden. I went to high school just north of there and then spent too many years after that in Ogden and Salt Lake (it was another life). Reach out and try some other resorts. They are GREAT! Utah may suck in nearly every way, but they have the Greatest Snow on Earth!

My guess is that they want to open before Killington, Vermont. They are ALWAYS the first to open up. Kinda funny they are on the East coast to....

Best place to go? Jackson Hole baby..

Agreed!! Snowbasin is by far the best area that I have ever skied at. Tons of awesome terrian, very few people, great lifts thank to the 2002 olympics and good snow conditions. The lack of any sort of village may be a problem to some, but it keeps the crowds away.

I just found out that my family will not be making our yearly trek out west to park city this year.:( Seems that with the olympics and all, the Mariott wants us to pay an extra absurd amount of cash to get our room for a week. So much for the time share. Guess we will have to go somewhere else. Maybe jackson hole!!!:) Hear it is sweet
