Need to change the gearing on my 02 400mxc. 52 tooth rear is what was recommended over stock. Can I just get a smaller counter shaft sprocket. I will eventully put new sprockets all around but would rather take the cheaper way with the counter shaft sprocket. Anyone know witch size to buy To accomplish close to the same as a 52 tooth rear?....Thanks for any help...

How many teeth are the stock sprockets?

All you need to do to get the gear ratio is:

RATIO=REAR TEETH/FRONT TEETH

A few examples:

53/14=3.79
52/14=3.71
51/14=3.64
50/14=3.57

51/13=3.92
50/13=3.85
49/13=3.77
48/13=3.69

49/12=4.08
48/12=4.00
47/12=3.92

Try this link to get a nice little chart of almost all the gear possibilities out there.

A 1 smaller front is the same as about 4 teeth on the back, but the chain "may" wear more since it has to wrap around a tighter radius and also more contact will be made with the swingarm glide plate as a larger sprocket holds the chain up higher and vice versa for smaller ones.

I have a 01 400 MXC and I run 13 - 52. I run single track up to a few desert a year with the same gearing. 1st gear is very tall on the MXC and even with this gearing 1st can still go 15 mph or so. I've been running this gearing for just over a year now with great wear - make sure you run that chain loose! :aj:

I have also heard that changing the front sprocket size will effect your rear suspension also. I can't remember why exactly, but something to do with the strain being applied to the swingarm pivot at a different angle causing more sag under acceleration.
