So my wife (Steff) told me to get a new bike and I was more then happy to oblige her request. I did some thinking and pondered my options for some time and decided to seek out a plated dirt bike of some kind. After talking to my friend Tony about it he told me that he just happened to have one for sale. And as luck would have it, it was a plated XR650R (also known as the XRR)! :) SWEET!!! I’ve always wanted one! And thus the stars had started to align for me. Being that Tony lives over there and I live over here we had to figure out how to get the XRR from him to me. Tony being the awesome friend that he is he drove it out to me. While this is going on my work told me that I was to lead an off road quad/dirt bike ride for them on a weekday. And this just happened to be during the time Tony would be visiting. Like I said the stars were aligning for me. So I call Tony to see if he was game to bring another bike so he could ride with us. Like always he’s game. As the conversation continues I find out that he has access to a quad for Steff and was willing to bring it too. So Tony arrives with toys in tow. His GPS was trying to send him the long way to my place. So I jump in the truck and head him off at the pass to show him the fast way to my place.
The day of the ride rolls around and we all go to my work to get everything ready. Sadly only one of my co-workers was able to go. We’ll call him Brian because that’s his name. So the four of us head off to Busco Beach for a day of “work.” Once there Brian, Steff and I (Tony wanted to talk to the folks running to park and told us to go on with out him) go for what we thought was going to be a little ride. The park is an ATV park so all of the trails are nice and wide with some two track tossed in. But the thing is we’ve never been here and we did not know that there would be the large mud holes dotting the trails. As we cruise along the trails Steff decides she wants to take up acting and does her best impression of Superman into a huge mud puddle. After getting her from under the quad we continued on our merry way. Steff has not been riding many times and she is doing pretty well. And when you take in to consideration that there was mud and ruts everywhere she was doing great!
At some point in time we come across a very large mud hole that we all need to cross. So first up is Steff. With some poking and prodding of the quad she makes it through. Next up is Brian, who makes it through with some drama but is not the worse for ware. Now it’s my turn and off I go. As I’m crossing the mud pit I get sideways and eat it. One thing I forgot to mention is that the mud is not really mud, it’s really greased mud. Now the XRR is 300+ pounds and it takes me some time to get the beast upright in the grease but it’s flooded. No big deal. At some point in time Brian comes back to check on me. He finds me covered in greased mud and comments that he thinks I took a spill. Being that I was coved head to toe in the greased mud I felt that was a rather astute observation. After that he’s off to get Steff because it’s not going to get any easier. With the three of us now discussing our next move, a mint looking two-stroke with a matching mint looking rider pulls up the greased mud hole. You can tell he’s thinking about crossing until he sees us on the other side covered in greased mud. He looks at us. We look at him. He looks at the greased mud again. He looks at us again, shakes his head almost as to say “I want no part of that.” We in turn get the XRR started with a little coaxing and I take a different path through some trees so I can avoid the greased mud. Steff and Brian are stuck with crossing the same mud hole. After making a mess, (not that they wanted to) they get through and we all head back to the base camp. What was to be a quick ride turned out to be over three hours long. After some lunch we met back up with Tony and hit up the other end of the park. The other side of the park is the kind of stuff that when wet it’s good to ride on. We all pick a direction and go our own way. Once in a while we would pass one of the other riders. After a bit of this we all meet up to hit up some more trails. We find some trails that a bit too nasty for the quad that Steff was riding and decide to regroup at one of the open riding areas. After a bit of goon riding we call it a day. What follows is the normal ride back to camp, strip out of dirty gear, load up the bikes and talk about the ride amongst our selves. All an all a great day to ride.
And the fender stickers? Well I’ve always wanted some DRN fender stickers, and now I have some.
