Some questions from a 2-stroke noob

Well, i've got an 02 kx 125, and i have a few questions. (1) First, i'm wondering what upgrades i can put on my bike (or what things i can do) to get the most out of the engine. It's already got a pipe. What things, such as reeds and other kind of stuff will make it faster? (2)Also, this may be a stupid question, but what does a good pre mix oil, such as yamalube or something, do for your bike over a cheaper wal-mart brand do? I'm guessing that it will burn better (less smoke) and provide better lubrication? (3) how often do u guys recommend i change the oil in my forks? just whenever they feel like they're sticking? (4) what does jetting the bike properly do for it? more power? help me out guys, i already ordered a manual, but it's gonna take 2 weeks to get here. :bang:

Well, alright, i guess u can get rid of all those other questions. One interesting thing about my bike is that if i turn the gas off for more than a couple of hours, it is hard to start. If i just leave the gas on it will start up immediately . Could this have to do with bad jetting? thanks.

Ok, and one more question. I know this one can be found using search, but they never seem to really answer the question. Everybody says that you can use any brand, any type of oil, as long as it's 10w40, but then they say they use something else because it's "better". Sooo, is it really fine to use a crappy brand of 10w40, or will i end up ****ing up my clutch? Also, i was reading a thread and a guy said that u should stay away from oils with high detergency. Is this true? thanks for taking the time to answer this. Also, what is a compression test? from doing a search it seems you use it to test whether or not u need to do a top end rebuild. I've been thinking about doing one and i'd like to know how.

Well I can answer your question about 2-stroke mixing oil. When i first bought my bike i used wal-mart crap and it was the biggest mistake of my life. Plug fouling every 10 minutes the bike would hardly run. when it did run throttle response was sloppy. Do yourself a favor and buy the better oil.

yamalube is cheap oil also. Use brands such as elf, motul, maxima, ipone, etc. A 1 L bottle of good transmission oil should cost about 10 bucks and good mixing oil should be around 15. Mix it 32:1. Look in your manual shop for the viscosity. For my 00 kx 125 it recommends SAE 10W30 which I get from Motul transoil. You'll soon realize, just like I did a week ago, that motocross is much and MUCH more expensive than you think

A compression test is a measure of how much pressure is created in the cylinder when the piston it at TDC. (Top Dead Center) It should be around 150 P.S.I. They make a special tool to measure it called a compression tester. I bought mine for 50 bucks from sears and it is a great tool to have around.

No I would not think so. Simply buy transmission oil, not 4-stroke motor oil! Not the same thing.

I've always used Castrol 20w50 with never a gear prob nor clutch, just keep it changed. Depending on how often and how hard you ride. If you ride hard: change it about every 3 to 4 rides, it's not like it's going to break the bank buying a quart of oil every 3 or 4 rides. Maxima 2 stroke mix is expensive but it's a top notch mix that gives great performance. Like said in previous post, mix at 32:1 ratio even though most synthetic mixes say you can mix up to a 100:1 ratio, it's better to be safe than sorry, your crank bearing will thank you time and time again. If you ever burn a crank bearing you'll never mix thin again after you price a crank. :whoa:
