spring or not??

KYB Shock for a 93 KX 250
Does anyone know for sure if there is suppose to be a spring between the brass compression clicker and the needle(inside compression valve) ? I did not have any compression adjustment and not sure if it ever had any since I owned it (just bought bike). I disassembles the shock and cleaned everthing really good but I was thinking there was suppose to be a spring in there.

Hey I really appreciate the help. I have to get it charged up hopefully tomorrow. I will let you know what the out come is.
