Hey CC... I have searched and searched and still cant get a firm answer. I just bought springs from a honda dealer for a 98 xr400. They came in reddish plastic wrap with the honda p/n and honda logo on it. Now came time to measure them and they are only 510mm. I did a search and it seems that you have been here before. Is it the Eibach springs that are 510mm? I know the ones I want should be 532mm ish. Any ideas mate or do you think I should take them back and get them to order the 532mm springs. Thanks in advance for your time and knowledge. They have 33 coils if that helps any.

Ive spoken to honda and have found out that they have sent me the 96-97 springs instead of the 98 model ones. Do you think that the spring rate difference would equate to a shorter spring.

The length isn't the critical issue. Some pairs of springs aren't even the same when compared to each other.

I haven't made it a habit to measure every xr spring made to determine for myself how much they vary. I'm sure they do..some.

From an earlier thread:

*****
From CDave (3-3-03):

It’s the 1996-99 0.38kg/mm XR400 springs that are interchangeable and commonly used in 1995 to 2003 KDX200/220s.

From racetech:
'96-99 xr400r 43mm showa .38
'00-02 xr400r 43mm showa .40

'H' model kawi spec:
'00 200 kdx 43mm kyb .35

**********

So....you were looking for .38s?

The 'good' part about the honda spring is that it is hotwound. If they are the rate you want, I wouldn't get too stuck on the length.

Given a choice, I'd rather have spring in the fork tube than spacer......

This is what is listed on servicehonda.com. P/N 51401-KCY-671 is for 96-97 models and P/N 51401-KCY-761 for 98-02. I have read numerous times the same info you posted above so I totally agree with you but I fully overlooked that info when I ordered mine. I was wondering if you think I should just stick with the springs P/N 51401-KCY-671 and just make the appropriate lenth preload spacer. Do you think the .38s will be good for someone that weighs 70kgs in street wear that jumps no bigger than 50 foot t/tops etc. I know the KDX isnt built for jumping huge, but i have jumped 73 foot with stock suspenders. Rather hard landing but it only JUST bottomed out the front (moral is be careful when seat bouncing). So would it be an advantage to have the .40s. If these are silly questions I apologise but Id like to get it right the first time round. I spoke to my honda dealer and he said that he will swap them for a set with the P/N 51401-KCY-761 as apposed to the ones i have P/N 51401-KCY-671. As always CC I really cant thank you enough for your time, dedication and knowledge you have to contribute to this site!!!

If I got email notification of thread responses, I'd have seen this sooner.....alas!

I'm not a jumper person. @155# with no gear, that would easily put you in the 180# range with gear.

I'd say (guess, opine, say in an opinionated fashion) that puts you close to the middle. .38s would likely do. With jumping stuff being an issue, I'd tend to the stiffer side of things.

The longer springs make small stuff pretty much unnoticeable, so don't worry that you will be feeling every pebble.

It's up to you, natch.

Judgement call!!

Now THAT'S a big help, 'eh?

Cheers!

I think either will be a great improvement for you. I personally ordered the 761 (the .40) and could not be happier. Took it out for a thorough shake down run before the then ednuro season opens next week and the bike handled superbly - I am not touching a thing. Went with about 10mm of presompression and clickers at stock setting. I think I wound up sticking with 90mm of oil.

I cant blame going slow on the forks anymore. Have to think of something else.

They are installed with 6mm preload and 110mm oil level. I am yet to ride it because of a recent crash and my cylinder and head are sitting on the bench in front of me (new top end). Ill be sure to post results when we are both repaired... :thumb:
