Stuck in gear

A buddy of mine has a 2k 250sx that the tranny seems to lock up every once in a while. In 3rd, pulled in the clutch and coasted to a stop and killed. Upon trying to restart couldn't get it out of 3rd. He was getting pretty frustrated because it's not the 1st time it happened. I suggested push starting and as soon as it fired up the tranny unlocked. Any ideas what may be the problem. It only does this when shut of in gear.

Treat the illness, not the symptom. Sounds like trouble up ahead. Or, maybe he just needs to rock it back and forth. Oh and stop shutting off in 3rd.
