I have a '99 DR 350 that will wears out my leg when it's cold. Usually takes a new plug to get it started, but that doesn't always work. Runs on full choke for several minutes, then partial choke for several more minutes before it will run ok. After warmup, it runs great. Any tips to help start when cold??

don't touch the gas while kicking it. a buddy of mine had one and it was hard starting when cold too, a good cleaning of the carb and a clean air filter really seemed to help it out. The starting procedure was usually just to pull the decomp. lever, kick it slowly until the lever pops back, then make sure the kicker is full up and jump on it. It'd usually light within 4 kicks.

I just learned this trick. First of all clean the carb

Pull in the comp lever and hold it. Then kick it about 6 times and twist the throttle on the first two kicks.

Then let start as usual.

Fires right up!

Our riding gang was made up of 5 DR's. One of which started easily - the rest were a bear.

No matter what the starting procedure - no matter how skilled the operator in four stroke starting procedures - a couple wouldn't start when cold unless we bumped 'em down a hill or towed them.

Yes, the valves were correctly adjusted, the carbs were perfectly jetted, everything was done right (I work at Powroll, if we can't figure it out, I don't know who can!).

The regular four stroke starting procedure will help - so will infinite patience and a titanium right leg.

We used to camp on top of a hill - now everyone in the group has gone to the DRZ - with e-start, of course!
