What are the odds of me being able to just take a proof of insurance and a copy of my title into the courthouse and walking out with a tag? Do dirtbike titles say anything on them that make them different from street titles?

Kansas doesn't have vehicle inspections, do they? Seems like I heard that somewhere. I think you may have a shot. If an inspection is required, it'll have to have whatever a street legal motorcycle requires-Lights, signals, DOT tires...

Maybe

I'm not sure about the SX models, but I know the EXC's don't say off road only on the Certificate of Origin. I was able to go to the DMV with my Certificate of Origin, the original sales receipt and a little bit of cash and walk out with a tag for my KTM 200exc. I also applied for a street legal title, which I received a month or two later. I did add a brake light, mirror and bicycle bell so it would be legal on the street ( of course I already had the other lights), but no inspection was required for the KTM in Illinois.

Good Luck

More than likely if you have a proper title you can get the plates. The street legal part is your responsibilty. If you only have the Statement of origin, which is usually what you get with a dirt bike, then it may be a little harder. Seeing as how you are in Kansas I doubt it will be very hard. I licensed a few Dirt bikes here in Wyoming and it was no prob..
