You should have it done here in Vail at the World Famous Steadman Hawkins Clinic. Best place in the World to have an ACL fixed. You could stay with me for a few days. Terell Davis of the Denver Bronco's came here for his surgery as well as Monica Selas when she got stabbed. Lord knows they do enough since a torn ACL is a very Common Skiing injury.

Arrggg, with all the kids doing all the FMX stuff, the Stop and Flop has lost some of it's glitz and glamour. It does, however, continue to get extra style points from the international judges if executed with flair and bravado........

Are you doing patella, hamstring or cadavear graft?

Seriously, get your leg as strong as you can BEFORE surgery. If I had to do it over again I would have delayed surgery in order to get my leg back into shape prior to going under. I was 6 months between injury and surgery & my leg atrophied.

ACL surgery is like pulling wisdom teeth if you ask me - pretty much everybody has had it done. Pains not bad - they gave me 60 vicodin and I took 4 before switching to ibuprofen.

Suggestion - go get a tall toilet seat because you won't be able to sit down very well with your leg in a brace.

BTW - scars on chicks are cool. (except certain cosmetic surgery scars:eek:

Well, thank you all for your kind wishes. I am bummed but at least they’ll fix it, and that will be the end.

It is my left knee. I am having the patellar graft. The doc says that she thinks it heals faster than a hamstring graft and she doesn’t like the risk of infection with the cadaver graft.

Nicole, thank you for your offer, but I don’t think my insurance would cover it. My doctor was much warmer the second visit and I feel very reassured. She is a sports specialist, and many, many people in my area have gone to her. Her initial bedside manner left something to be desired but perhaps she was busy that day.

I will go to the gym again as soon as I can. The pain is still too bad for me to go. I was on my feet all weekend (Las Vegas for the US Open!) and that probably wasn’t good for it. Like I was going to miss the US Open.

Reno is still a maybe though I can’t ride. I had so much fun I would consider flying down just to see everybody and hang out. Is there a race for you Reno natives that same weekend again? Maybe this time I could watch Strick and Bobby and the rest of the local crew race. If I can afford it, I’d like to come down again anyway.

I had the patellar graft and almost everybody I know has had the patellar graft. I got the same story about it being the 'gold standard'. My biggest complaint about the patellar graft is that I can not kneel down on my left knee w/o a hard shell knee pad. It just feels way too weird - it's not painfu,l just not comfortable. People who are 5+ years post-op still can't kneel. I'm almost 2 years post-op and it hasn't improved or gotten worse. The one guy I know that has had a hamstring graft does not have that problem - neither does his wife who recently had ACL reconstruction.

Just something to think about.

I'm sure you'll be fine.

I agree, I can't kneel down either...well, I can, but it feels really weird. I don't like it, but since I don't kneel much, it's ok ;)
My friend that had the hamstring graft is still having pain, 3 years later, everyone else I know had the patellar.
I think everyone's different, but the patellar seems to fit most people the best.
Also, I didn't have a general anesthetic, I went with the epidural, it was awesome! I got to watch while they were doing it on the monitor, although for most of it I was way to 'out of it' to really understand what I was seeing!
The recovery time was so much better for me though, since general anesthetic tends to make me really sick. And believe me, with the drugs they give you with an epidural, I wouldn't have cared (at that moment anyway) if they would've cut my leg off! I was high as a kite, so being awake isn't as bad as one would think!

Ahhhh, the epidural!!! If it hadn't been for THAT man made wonder, my second child would have never even been a thought! ;)

Can you buy those over the counter yet? I could use one some days when the Project Managers turn into real pains in the uhhhhh :think neck.

I get whatever they feed me through the IV AND a nerve block. I will keep the video tape to bring for show and tell, too. Plus I get some scars to show off!!!

I had the general - asked about watching & the doc said 'you really don't want to'. I've got still photos from the scope - no video:(

The last thing I remember is the drug doc - can't spell the big word:) - saying I'm going to give you something to take the edge off, it will burn a little, start counting backwards from 100. I felt the burn as the stuff came thru the IV & I got to 99. From there - who knows what they did to me....

I watched Mom's video of her ACL op and it's so odd it's not even gross. All you see is little tools moving pieces of white stuff around in a swirl of red stuff. Hers was 12 years ago though so mine might be different.

I have never had an IV before. I'm nervous just thinking about a needle in my arm, never mind the rest of it!!

The worst is when they try to get the IV in when your dehydrated. They stabed me 7 times trying to get that thing in.

If they cant get the IV on the second stab tell them to get a better nurse. 1/2 of them are below average you know!:D

errrrr.. ....don't post that kind of stuff!!!! Especially to someone that doesn't want a needle in them LOL!
Sharla, let me tell you...they will give you such good drugs you won't care how many needles they stick in you :D
