The Scattershield is only gonna protect you from roost - not from injury. If you're looking for a chest protector - check out Thor's new Force protector or the Aftershock. These protectors will help protect your back, ribs, chest, shoulders, etc.

I had about 8 decent crashes before I tore one shoulder off of my Aftershock. I enjoy it mucho and can't tell I'm wearing it.

Elbow or Shoulder guards?

I have a Scattershield and like it for woods riding. However, it doesn't have elbow guards and the shoulder guards only offer limited protection. There is a large gap between the top of the shoulder guard and the neck area that the occasional tree will hit if you turn in to soon. There is also a gap in the side rib cage area that offers no protection. These are the two biggest weaknesses and should be considered prior to purchase.

The pros are that in cooler weather I wear it under the jersey but over a tee shirt or sweat shirt. This limits limbs/etc. from snagging the chest protector. It also offers maximum movement when worn over or under the jersey. It does a good job with roost and limbs that try to poke you in the tight stuff.

If you are looking for maximum protection there are certainly better protectors out there, as Nikki and Jaybird suggested. :thumb:

Good Luck,
Scott

Thanks folks. From the pic, I thought it had more protection... Which is why I asked! I appreciate the info, and now I think that Aftershock one may fill the bill better. I don't care about fashion, only function since it won't make me look (or ride) better anyway!

Nick.

I don't think any of the chest protectors come with the elbow guards attached.

What I did with mine is to attach my elbow guards to the chest protector with nylon ties. I just drilled a small hole in the top of my Fox elbow guards and took a couple nylon ties and attached them to the shoulder guards on my chest protector.

That way when you hit the ground, it doesn't drag your elbow guards off of your elbows. I found that every time I crashed on my elbow guards they would rotate away from my elbows or slip down leaving my elbows exposed. If I tightened the straps tight enough so that they did not slip, it cut the circulation off to my hands and caused arm pump.

By attaching the guards to your chest protector, you can leave the straps loose and still not have the elbow guards slip down.

Just my $ .02 Hope this helps. :thumb:
