I am looking for a new back tire for my bike, the trails I ride in michigan tend to have more sand on them, so I'm looking for a intermediate to soft terrain tire.
Any thoughts or comments about what tires anyone recommends will be greatly apreciated.
I bought a used bike that had the S-12's on it and did not like them for MI riding so I switch back to my tried and true favorite Dunlop's 756's fron t and rear. But as you know everybody different some people like boxer's and some like breif's.
I have experience of Dunlops D756 which I found faultless in mud, sand and hard intermediate terrain. Bridgestone Gritty Enduro are average in all the same situations. I have also been recommended Kenda Trackmasters (see review) by my dealer. They are soft compound but retail cheap over here in the UK.
and they use Mostly Michelin S-12's here in MI Dist 14 Enduros. That's how I did my research...then I slapped a S-12 on the rear and like it. I already had a good Dunlop 755 on the front and it may be a bit better than an S-12 on the front.
I did a bunch of rides this season in Michigan starting with s12 rear and s12 front. This combo worked good but I used these tires on a colorado ride and had to replace the rear with an m12 but continued to use the s12 front. The m12 got good drive but didn't corner as well as the s12 rear. Then I mounted an IRC M5B in the rear and m12 in the front. This is the best combination I've used in the sand. The M5B really hooks up in the sand and corners well. The m12 front has been working well but I had EE revalve my fork at the same time so I'm not sure how good the tire is but the forks are absolutely great.
Ditto on what everyone else said, except for the IRC's. Don't know much about them. You also may want to check out some 752's. If I remember correctly, they're discontinued and you might be able to get a bargin on them somewhere. I'm using s-12 up front and 752 in rear. They both work really well in MI. I've been on every imaginable surface that our state has to offer, and they've worked well on all of it.

the s12 is ok.
but, on bigger bikes it spins too easy in sand (for me)
the m26 moves more but is a bit fragile..and only comes in 19"
Michman bought my bike with the S12s on it. I now run an M12 front and an S12 with better results. The M12 grips better in the hard pack than the S. I still like the S12 rear better than the M12 rear though. I buy the Michelins because they are about $20 a tire cheaper in Canada than Dunlops are. No one imports IRCs to Canada anymore.
I have used the Pirelli MT44 with excellent success down here in Florida. It hooks up in the deep sugar sand and any type of loose terrain. Watch out for the hard stuff though my 520 tends to tear the knobs completely off the tire.
I found the 756 rear to hook up well for a while, but the knobs round off very quickly compared to s12's. The main reason I won't be getting another 756 rear is that they don't inspire any confidence in fast flat corners. They seem to hook up well until push comes to shove, then they will slide out very suddenly and unpredictably on any given surface. I think an s12 rear will slide out sooner, but much more predictably, ie the s12 is a better rear tire imo.
The 756 is great front tire. It does well on all surfaces, unlike the 755 front which I found good in sand, very poor in mud, and no better than avergae anywhere else. Pirelli's MT44 is a very good all round front tire too, and wears better than the dunlops.
