He did really good, I started him off by just pushing him around with his feet on the pegs and made him stop using the brakes. Then I let him start the bike up and go about 100' in a straight line and stop next to a cone. Then I set up some more cones in a slalom about 25' apart and he went around all of them. By the end of 2 hours he was standing up and heading straight for the bumpy part of the field where some trucks left some ruts. I think he'll be ready to shift the next time I take him out. The only thing he really needs work on is stopping, grabs the front brake with the same intensity as the clutch trying to pull it all the way in.

I think the next time I'll set up an oval track with about 10 cones and have him stop at each one and do about 10 laps. That'll be 100 starts and stops.

Moved.

One thing I learned (the hard way) when teaching my wife to ride was to adjust the front brake so that it would hold her if stopped, but wouldn't dump her on her head (again) if she grabbed it fully by mistake. Once she got comfortable with the bike, I slowly adjusted it back to normal.

I just bought my son a 2001 XR50. He is 4 years old and the dealership had to put training wheels on it for him. I haven't given to him yet, I bought for his birthday. Do you know if you can put governors on an XR50? I am afraid that he will just go balls to the wall. He isn't really scared by much, he just laughs.

i would say you should be able to put in some kind of govenor/throttle limitter. I would talk to your dealer to see if they have any ideas on it.

I just moved my son up from a TTR-90 to a TTR-125. From 3 speed semi-automatic (no clutch) to a 5 speed w/ clutch.

He is having a great time learning but he can't quite get the concept of letting the clutch out smoothly. He starts slow and smooth but as soon as the bike begins to roll he simply lets go. After about a half hour of starts and stops he quit because his neck was sore from being jerked back on each start.

I had him get on the tank of my bike while I did some starts and stops to let him get the feel of starting smoothly.

He's getting there but it is taking a while. He is 8 yrs old.

There is a screw with a lock nut on the front side of the throttle housing that will let you adjust the amount of twist on the throttle. I am teaching our five year old how to ride and when we first started I turned it almost all of the way in to limit the throttle. Now his favorite thing is "Lets take the screw driver with us".
Pretty exciting to watch a childs eyes light up when he or she realizes that they are riding just like Dad or Mom.;)
Don't forget the safety gear! I would definetly suggest knee and elbow guards for the little ones in addition to a good helmet and gloves.

Oh yeah, I already got him a good helmet. Thanks for suggesting the knee and elbow pads though, didn't think of those. I think he will have a lot of fun on it, he loves watching Nascar and MX/SX on TV and loves my bike.

94cr,

I found the best way to set the throttle limiter on the xr50 is to first properly warm the bike up, then set the throttle screw so that the engine cannot overrev when in neutral. You will have to turn the screw WAY in.
