Hi

Im getting a new bike this spring (hopefully) and will be using it for trail riding only. I want to get a kdx 220 but would a 4 stroke maybe be a better bet? Ive never riden one before but I've heard their pretty good. Any suggestions on what 4 stroke bike would be similar to a 220?

IMO, Stick with the KDX

the KDX 220 is a great bike. It's as easy to ride as any 4-stroke and it weighs substantially less. With a few easy modifications, it really rips. I can easily keep up with my buddy on his WR250F (which is one of the most aggressive four stroke trail bikes). I can also start my bike in one kick--every time--and reach the ground with my feet (I'm 6'0" and I can't flat foot a WR). If you're comparing one to an ordinary 4-stroke trail bike (XR, DRZ, etc.), you should compare it to a 400, not a 250. On top of all that, it's substantially less expensive than most four-strokes.

The only downsides are (i) you have to mix your fuel; and (ii) the suspension is outdated (if you're heavy, new fork springs are a must and, if you are really fast, you'll want the forks re-valved).

I have a KDX. Accordingly I am biased. Keep in mind, that I returned a WR250 in exchange for the KDX (and I don't regret the decision). Also, for what it's worth, I have an old 1982 KDX 175. It still starts on one kick and rides great (considering its vintage).

Whichever way you go, good luck and have fun!!!

The KDX is an awesome trail bike!!If you where to consider another 2-stroke you might like a KTM200exc.I would stick with a 2-stroke because of the light weight and they are so much easier to start.I know you will have fun on whatever you get.

You might want to check out the Kawi KLX300. It's kind of like a 4 stroke KDX from what I've heard. Similiar handling and build. I've got 2 KLX's and love em. Never had a chance to ride a KDX, but from what I've heard they're great trail bikes too. If you think you might want a 4 stroke, check out the KLX. If you're intrested in finding out more, check out http://www.planetklx.com Cheers.

I've had many different bikes in the short time I've been riding (2.5 years). I've had a couple of KDX's (200 and 220), XR400, KLX300, YZ400F, etc. Right now I have a '99 KDX 200 with the FMF pipe and heavier springs. To me, this is probably the best bike out of all the ones I've had. It's super easy to start, it's lightweight, controllable power whenever you need it, etc.

No offense to the people that are into KLX's, but I probably liked that bike the least. With the CV carb, it has virtually no power when you need to lift the front wheel over a tree. Of course, you can buy a pumper carb for it, but those aren't cheap.

The KDX is tough to beat for a trail bike. The only thing I don't like about it is having to mix the gas and oil, but this isn't really too bad.

Good luck with your decision.

For trail riding I don't think you can beat a KDX especially considering the price. My last bike was a '00 KDX 200 which I really liked for trail riding but it didn't do so well in more high speed stuff. I added stiffer springs and a FMF pipe which really woke the bike up. I currently ride a '01 WR250F and I love it. It has about the same hp as my KDX but the suspension and brakes are worlds better. Yes, it can be a pain to start but once you learn how it's not that bad. And, it is tall. I am 6' and I can't touch flat footed either. I think for low end power and tight trails the KDX was better but at speed I would take my WR any day. My brother rides a '01 KTM 200EXC which is a very nice bike also. Compared to a KDX it has more power, way better suspension, and better quality components but it costs a lot more too.
