Tranny oil

I just bought an 01 KX250. I'm gonna stick with the same premix and ratio that the previous owner was running. He was running Golden Spectro Tranny oil, not sure what weight. My question is do I need to keep running the same oil, or can I switch brands. And what weight should I be using in central California. And any suggestions on brand?
Also just ordered a manual, but need to know the oil capacity for an oil change before it gets here.
Thanks Hierro

You can switch brands when you drain it. If your getting a genuine manual thats your best guide.

After talking to the guy again it seems that he's been using 1/3 lucas oil additive and 2/3 Golden Spectro in the tranny, should I continue to do this or just use the gear lube?

This is a topic that's been beaten to death.

But, for what it's worth, I run Shell Rotella T in all of my bikes. Works fine.
