My manual calls for 10-w30 in the tranny. Right now i have 10-w40 in it. Would it be ok to put 20-w50 in ? Would that result in different clutch behavior? I am only tempted to use it because there is a 5 quart container of Castrol GTX (no ec) sitting in my basement that my brother uses for his ninja which would be quite convenient for me.

I've always used 20-50. You get smoother shifting for the same price.

10-w40 works fine, just use the stuff you have.

10w40 ad 30 works good i used them both 9in my yz80, but now i use 80w90 from golden spectro, its a good oil for wet plate clutches

i just use streight 40 weight ,,,it is roughly the same thickness as 80 w 90
the only difference is the price
if im wrong someone please correct me !

Are you sure? I think 40 weight oil is the same thickness as...well, 40 weight oil. 80w-90 is thick gear oil. When an oil has two numbers i.e. 80-w90 it means the viscosity when cold and the viscosity when at operating temp. If it has one number i.e. 40, it does not have the polymer additives to help it from thinning at high temp.

Engine oil and gear oil are not rated with the same sytem. 80w gear oil is approximately equivalent to 30w engine oil as far as viscosity is concerned.
