I just rode at Chadwick this spring. They're somewhat similar in that they are both rocky and hilly. Turkey Bay has more loose rocks, while Chadwick was more of embedded rock. There were a couple of hills at Chadwick that reminded me of Turkey. There was one called the Widow maker and one called the Dairy queen (I think). Those were like alot of the hills at Turkey Bay. Only there are about 500 different hill climbs at Turkey Bay. Most of the hills at TB aren't huge (as in 200 ft. elevation change) but they are steep and loose, and you have no room to get a run at some of them. The trail system is laid out MUCH better at Chadwick. Most trails at TB aren't marked and all are two way, with everything from bikes to buggies on them. One thing that sets TB apart from most areas is the amount of trail intersections. You usually can't ride 50 feet on a trail without the trail branching off in multiple directions. Come on out and ride with us Nov. 8-10. :)

I don't think I can make that weekend. Don't think the wife will let me out two weekends in a row. Going bow hunting for three days the week before your weekend.

Thanks for the info! Michael my son, never ceases to amaze me. Every time we climb a long rocky hill that I know he's gonna crash on, he makes it up without a hitch. That little XR is a tractor. He's finally figured it out.

We pretty much do the same when we ride, couple big loops, put in 30-40 miles and then break off for a couple 'whoop-ass' runs until someone crashes, or breaks something :) and the larger the group the slower it seems to go.

I'm no pro but can keep up with a lot of folks. I'm not in my 20's anymore so I approach my rides a lot different than I did even 5 years ago. But I don't want to be the only one out there with my son, it help to have other kids for other kids :) if you know what I mean.

CAL , I musta been sleeping and missed this post. I ALWAYS like riding LBL. I am real interested in LBL in November but camping in the pop up that time of the year sounds pretty durn cold. I saw your offer to let a few folks stay at your place and thats is very nice of you but do you know of any vacation homes around the lake somewhere we could rent out and all stay there? You know turn the place into a DRN home away from home.

Eddie Aimee. Pleaser, Timr come on now whaddya say? If we could get a warm place (3 bedroom house type accomodation) to stay would you be interested?

Alright, now we're talking! Glad to see your reply, Mike.

I'll see what I can find out about the rentals. I have some cousins from Georgia that have a place on the lake not too far from LBL. I think it's a mobile home they use as a vacation home when they're up here. They don't rent it out, but they may let me(you) borrow it. I know there are vacation homes for rent, but wether or not I can find contact info...

Mike - I am definitely in for the lodging thing - assuming that work doesn't prevent me from going. I am pretty sure I will be able to make it at this point. Give me a shout if you figure anything out on lodging. I may not make it there until late Friday though - gotta check the vacation hours.

I hate to blow off the Mississippi gang, but LBL sounds like a fun place to ride. If you guys can swing a place to stay, I'm all over it. I'm not a big fan of having my cheeks frozen (ANY of 'em) so camping is out. Motels are OK, but I really like the idea of a lodge type thing.

Lemming may be a player, too. I hear he has some free time these days. :uh:

Larry,

Check CAL's original post ;) Glad to hear you are interested in coming up :thumb:
I'm pretty sure that YZ400guy wouldn't mind you staying with us in Clarksville, but it is a 60 mile hike each way to LBL. Do you think you could handle a night out with officers? :) Sat. evening we might head for Nashville, or just grill some Angus and benchrace, it's all up in the air untill I get ahold of them on Wed.

I just called one rental home. They are having some work done this weekend, so no go on that one. I've sent an email to another(log cabin). The rates for the cabin were listed $150 day, two day min. Here is a link of accomodations with motels and resorts. If you guys have any questions on which ones are near Turkey Bay, just ask. Any that are in Benton, KY or Aurora, KY, or if they say Jonathon Creek will be the closest.

Cal and others riding Nov. 9 at Turkey Bay:

They are having a volunteer trail clean-up day on Nov. 9. Matt, the great guy who works there (he likes bikes) said they will have free camping, food and beverages for volunteers that weekend. They had flyers at the guard shack. I mentioned the club idea and they really liked it. We need to get the bike riders together and organize. The last riders meeting had several rail buggy, jeep and 4-wheeler supporters, but only 2 bike riders, my riding buddy and myself. I don't know the extent of what they want to accomplish, but I'm sure we could chip in a bit, you know, for the cause. BTW, I rode yesterday and the trails were awesome for those who haven't ridden there. I've been riding there for a little over a year and still find new trails. You have to ride the new ones quickly before the dune buggies make the hills unclimbable, though.

I thought the cleanup day was Nov. 2 ?

You were there yesterday? You didn't happen to see a YZ426 with handguards and a fender pack did you?

BTW, I've been riding there since '95 and I'm still finding new trails. I even found some yesterday. :)

I'm all for getting a club together. We need to get that bridge built so we can get across the creek. There are some good trails over there. You think we could get away with making the bridge 24" wide? ;)

Corey, do you remember the post in the KYiana chapter forum? "Turkey Bay Assault Club." I am still looking around but I should have something by the first of the week. My mind is a little focused right now on OCS, so I can't really devote alot of time to it right now.

The Forestry Service holds rider meetings quarterly(I think). They try to get feedback from the riders on what we want, and let us know what they want/need. I've been impressed with the meetings I've attended. The FS actually listens and seems interested in riders' points of views. Some of the riders get carried away with requests/comments though. Seems like they forget about the big issues of keeping the area open and healthy, but focus on things like trash service and permission to drink alcohol. :silly: I think a group of 15-20 people could do alot of good in preserving/enhancing the riding area. I would like to see if VSTA would get involved. I know they have met with the FS about Turkey Bay and offered suggestions.

TTRguy, Julius I am glad to hear it man. The hanging out with friends stuff is about as much fun as the riding.

CAL, I looked around the internet yesterday and found several places that will sleep 8 or so people but most are about 30 mins drive to Turkey Bay. I will try to get a list of those places that look interesting and run them by ya for approval. I dont really want to stay in a fish camp if you know what I mean.

Julius I lost my 'pm" ability so send me a email to my work address [email protected] since I am tied to this computer from 8 - 4 every day and I will get back with ya. Make sure to tell Timr and Lemming to keep that weekend in mind.

We will need to get a rough head count on who wants to share the place so we know how big of a place to get.

Let the plannning begin. :thumb:

According to Matt at the guard shack, the meetings are not quarterly yet. He said they wanted to try to accomplish some things discussed at the last meeting before having another one. The bad thing is, they discussed closing the creek to the right of the main trail running north. So far, it's still open to cross the creek, but not for long if they do what they said. We can probably have some input at the cleanup day about a bridge or some alternative.

OK SO far I have found the following site that are within reasonable driving distance from Turkey Bay:

http://www.kentuckylake.com/go/privatehome/
http://www.kentuckylake.com/go/familylakefront/
http://www.moorsresort.com/cottages/index.htm
http://www.kentuckylake.com/lakefrontloghome.htm
http://www.kentuckylake.com/go/lakefronthome/
http://www.kentuckylake.com/moonbayharbor.htm
http://www.kentuckylake.com/cozycove/index.htm#top
http://www.lighthouselanding.com/cottages.htm

With the amount of trialers required to get all our gear there a house or private cabin would be the way to go in my opinion.

CAL .. Need some local input here. Whaddya think? How far are most of these places. Some of those houses look pretty cool. :thumb:

Julius, TTR, Speedy, Lemming, Wheelie, OR ANYONE interested in staying at DRN's Ole Kentucky home ... Need your input too. What looks goood to ya?
