It sounds like an aftermarket regulator that you describe. I recently bought one since I am planning to put lights on a 250XCW. The regulator I have came from Moose Racing and it does have basic instructions in the package.

Does it look like this?

I do know that you need to mount it securely to something like the frame since the case is intended to dissipate heat. The brown wire is ground and the yellow is hot (12VAC). I am assuming you have a 2K2 stator which is about 40 watts and powers the lights with AC current……..no rectifier is required. If you have the higher powered 2K3 stator, I cannot help you as I have no experience with that one.
