What color to paint KX frame?

Really this is a personal choice so whatever makes ya happy do it I've saw a kx once that had a white frame and green plastics. the flourescent green may give it like a yellowish tone to it under certain lighting. Hell you could do what someone I know did once they got flo red plastic's like a CR was going to paint the frame either red or silver and put on a black gripper seat. I tell you it was actually really sweet looking with those plastics.

the flo green looks sic but i think if you could find it i would get it done in mirage or black. it depends on the color of your plastics. if they are black then flo green will look cool. if they are gonna be flo green then black would look good. i would stay away from color matching. if the colors are different by just one shade then it wouldnt look good. for example the flo green plastics could be a little lighter than the flo green paint. or the black frame could be a darker black than the plastics. im not just fooling around here. ive seen a bike that had black plastics and black frame and the frame made the plastics look brownish. but when viewed separate they each looked black. so its up to you but think about what i said.:silly:
Go with flo green! Pictures don't do it justice. The KX250 looks great with flo green. I've got my KX500 powdercoated flo green with flo green front fender and since they no longer make a rear fender in flo green, I had to go with black. IMHO it looks really nice. I have often wondered how a chrome powder coating would look. It might be pretty cool and would be compatible with any color.

Buddy had a 96' KX250 that someone had painted the frame white - used it looked like crap. Every ding, rust spot and peice of dirt just jump out at you. Looks the worst around the lower frame tubes and countershaft sprocket.
Black has some of the same issues with dust, etc. and IMHO makes you look like a member of the Metal Mulisha (not good).
He then painted it flo green and sold it, and it looked worse than white because it didn't match the plastic, and over time I've seen the flow green get lighter with UV rays, uuck.
Go with the stock green and paint it with PJ1 frame paint, OR try a metallic dark grey or silver. With PJ1 you can touch it up yourself by simply masking off any areas (motor, footpegs with aluminum foil).
My brother bought Larry Roeseler's KLX365, and Stroker had painted the frame that a dark silver metallic. Looks cool and holds up well to dirt and abuse. If anyone gives you grief, just tell them that Roeseler paints his bikes this way. BTW, grey looks best without the purple graphics, go with the new black and silver stickers.

IMHO a silver-grey would look great with any plastic combo.

Yeah, silverish-gray would be cool on the KX. Especially with the black plastic and excel wheels (wish there were a way to get black wheels without the cost of excels) Whoever does this is required to post pics for the rest of us to see.

i painted my sons myself, black but put on irredescent flake with clearcoat over it. cost me $12. easy to toutch up. obviously not for everyone, but the black does offset the green well. very cool in the sunlight the accent changes as you walk around it. $2 at the craft store. (poor mans chameleon paint!)
have seen flo green. never seems to match the plastic right and looks like it. mighty gross.
i might try that silver "hammertone" paint or black wrinkle for something different this season. suzuki silver gray looks real good. maybe just on some of the odd parts.

whatever color you decide on, just make sure you have it professionally done and dont do it in your garage with a spray can. I made that mistake once, I prepped it really good, and primed, put several coats of paint and finally a clear coat, but it didnt last very long when rocks dinged up the paint. My brother got his powder coated at a pro shop and it was NICE!!

Two schools of thought here obviously. I don't think I would ever spend the money to have a frame powdercoated, preferring to have the ability to touch up the frame with the extra cans of paint I have in the shop. Powder coating is tougher, but it will wear and chip.
These are dirt bikes, not Harleys! Clear coat is over the top, along with chrome plastic, etc. Chips and wear marks from boots are badges of honor! This weekend I saw a guy with a REALLY clean and nicely done black and yellow YZ 250, from the '93-'95 era. It must have taken hours in the shop, he even painted the plastic some sort of flat black, but it was really sharp.
I lapped him twice in a two hour hare scrambles... maybe my priorities are screwed up, but I don't remember them giving out trophies to the best looking bike when I was picking up my 1st place B trophy.
as far as doing the frame yourself,if you are a hack it will come out bad. i sandblasted the entire frame to bare metal, 2 coats of black, the flake when it was still sticky, and then clearcoat to protect it. came out great and it held up really well. the parts where it came off (boot contact etc) only make it look better in our opinion. i tried the powdercoat and imho it is overpriced and not worth the $.
chrome would be nice but i priced it up about $300 for a mini frame. sorry, i would rather buy spares.

Go with the black!! I would also do it myself. It doesnt take long to tear a 2 stroke down to touch up whatever wears and doing it yourself is much cheaper and it gives you a good reason to do alittle wrenching. And as far as wheels I would look into getting them annodized black and the hubs gold and while your at it tear your forks apart and get the outer tubes done black as well.

my friend had his kx frame chromed, it looked sweet
With the new season next year, its a really good excuse now to have a change of bike outlook.
I've change mine fron splitfire decals to skin industries, and I was thinkin of touchin up the frame as well (i've got black plastics with green fender, green frame,black rims and black hubs) , but at the rate im going, I predict it will get scratched and grease marked in no time....so I guess it'll be shiny new decals n plastic with rusty frames for next year!
