It's the motorcycle business and for most companies, two-strokes just aren't good business right now. It's nothing more complicated than that.

If that changes then the available choices might also change, but there isn't anything on the horizon that would lead anyone to think it will happen in the foreseeable future.

Rich, what's your estimate on current GP level power? 125's 50-60hp? 250's 100+?

Luddites -bah humbug! I'll keep smoke'in till the parts run out, then weld the scraps back together and smoke some more :nener:

Based on what I've seen I would think it's closer to 47-52 on 125s and 95-103 on 250s. Even that might be overly optimistic.

I was at the arena cross race last weekend and was talking to the owner of Lancester sport cycles and asked him about yammies 2-stroke. He told me that they were saying 2010 was gonna be the last year. But nothing has been said for sure.

hmm, an authority no less than Kevin Cameron said in the September issue of Cycle World that the 125 GP's - and i paraphrase - "put out in excess of 60 rear wheel horsepower".
As the 125 is essentially 1/2 of the 250 i'm thinking 120 hp for the 250's is right on the mark. If 250lbs/120hp power-to-weight ratio is irrelevant....
anyway, KTM is set to revolutionize motocross with their DFI 2 stroke. i heard it will be a 2010 model

Well then someone at Suzuki owes me an explanation why my sons RM125's put out roughly 35 HP and my RM250 only put out around 50. I can't believe those idiot engineers at Suzuki forgot to include the extra 20hp on my RM250 no wonder I went to a 4 stroke!

That's not really what he said, and it was more of a throw-away statement to show comparative context in an article about vintage machines.

The difference between the 50 horsepower that KC and a lot of other smart folks were claiming 125 GP engines were making just a few years and the 60 hp mentioned in the above piece is about a 17% increase per square inch of piston area. That is an enormous increase on an already highly developed engine technology that hasn't changed significantly in a very long time.

That said, if KC says that they make that kind of power, I'm smart enough not to argue the point. Hopefully he'll do a TDC column that goes into more detail on the current two-stroke GP technology. He certainly would have a big audience for a column like that. With GP 250s going to 600 four-strokes it seems logical that he might write an article that compares the relative power outputs and the methods by which they are achieved.

I'll believe that when I see it sitting at my local dealer. I hope you are right, but regulations in some of the EU countries are making life really difficult for the manufacturers, so you might want to wait a bit before putting down a deposit on one. ;)

You really want to stick such a big American icon on a chinese bike? :coocoo: Please, Bigfoot should ride something big and American such as a Harley, or an Indian, or a Harley chassis with an Indian motor!
