What year is this bike?

I have a friend that is telling me he just bought a 1988 KDX 200 for $200. I told him that the bike must be older. It had hydraulic brakes, it's white, and it's air-cooled. Anyone have any idea if this could be an 88? When did KDX go from air-cooled to liquid-cooled?

I would love to prove this guy wrong, since he keeps telling me that bike will toast my '93 KX 250. I know he's wrong about beating me, but I would love to prove him wrong on the year of his bike as well.

It's possible that it is an '88.  KDXs went to liquid cooling in '89.  I think the white version of the KDX was available in '87 & '88.

bad news, I am looking at buying a white, 1988 KDX 200 Air cooled, with front disk break, rear drum. Sorry to disappoint you, but he may be right on the first one, and the second one is partly up to the rider. :) Hopefully you can prove him wrong on the second one as well. If not, see if he'll sell you the 200.

For the record, disc brakes were intorduced on the front in 1986. Water cooling did not begin until 1989 and a rear disc was also added that year. I think the white color option did not start untul 1990, but they may have put on accessory plastic. The best way to verify is if it has a Keihin instead of a Mikuni carburetor, then it is a 1988.
