Whats detonation?

okay, yes, a very newbie question for some of you. But we all have to learn somewhere. i noticed the posty below this one on detonation. I was wondering how exactly do you tell if your bike is detonating.? My 1990 made a slight rattling noise when idling. But now i have the bike stripped down for a new top end....so new piston, rings, etc. The only mods the bike has is a FMF Fatty pipe. Everything else is stock...And if my bike was detonating, will the new top end fix it?

Detonation usually occurs under a heavy load. If your bike was rattling while at idle in neutral or with the clutch in, it is extremely unlikely that the sound was detonation.
