Where did term "harescramble" come from?

I've been wondering where the term harescramble came from. Did it have something to do with people chasing rabbits?

Kinda like an omelete with rabbit stuffing but chopped up. Sometimes instead of wasting a rabbit, a large chunk of hair can be thrown in the scramble.

I thought it came from having a "pro" out front and everyone else chasing him??

That's a Hare & Hound.

Don't know about the origin of Hare Scramble, but I will make a guess. In the early days, MX style races lapping a course for a set time period were often called scrambles, while the Hare & hounds were longer cross country races.

So a Hare Scramble would be sort of a combination of the two - intermediate length course, running laps for a longer period than a scrambles.
