I have the same bike and same problem. I tried a few things . . . run br8eg plugs; yes they are hotter, but my bike will foul 9's like crazy. I got my bike last year and spent 3 months trying to get it to run. You also want to clean your power (RC) valve. Mine was very carboned up from the rich running. I am running a 400 main jet, stock everything else. I will probably move the clip up to the 2nd position when I tear it down this winter. It runs great. I also have a pro circuit pipe and silencer, but stock reeds.
I am considering VF-3. Have you ever heard the saying, "opinions are like arm pits--everyone has a couple and they both stink?" Well, that is very true with your question about reeds, so here is my stinky two pesos worth. . . it seems like a lot of guys with our bike 03-05 (most 250 cc though) say the v-force really helped. The gain is minimal on other bikes, but going on their recommendations, it looks to be a good helper. It should also help your jetting as it cleans up the low end. The other option I though of is keeping stock cage but putting in Boyesen's Carbon fiber dual stage reeds (Pro Series, I think). Honda switched to more petals on the reeds for 2005 and they also were dual stage (stiff at bottom for high speed, easy on tips for low end). Just a few things I learned from months of frustration. Also Honda recommended 32:1 HP2 oil, but that was too rich for my area (humidity). I love Amsoil (if you can find it, run it by their specification = 50:1) Great Stuff! I also have had good luck with Motul 600 (800 is same but is not "no smoke" and it costs 1/3 more). Happy riding!
