Wondered what opinions are out there about which tire everyone likes to run on the Michigan trails? What about different tires in the U.P.?

My FOREVER favorite has been the Chen Ching 760 in the widest version that would fit!! Ran them for years and did real well on them!! Problem is - they are not available in 19 inch and they loose the edge pretty quick if you run them on pavement. I have tried lots of others on the big KX and it REALLY likes the Dunlop 752 front and rear - I think the new 756 may be a good replacement as the 752 is now obsoulete.. I have tried Michelin and they like to come apart on me, had Trelborgs on my VOR and they chunked off real bad too and CRACKED, am going to try Kenda Trackmasters this summer (I go thru tires) as they are DOT and have an EXCELLENT report!!
I really liked the Luguna Cross too but have you seen what they did to that? The last one I bought had only 1/2 wide nobs (the nobs were full width at the base but then it tapers to 1/2 width). I still have the tire sitting in the garage - ONE trip to my play ground (10 miles) on the KX and the nobs were breaking off - $80 tire too!
In Michigan sand, tire pressure has just as much to do with hook up as tread design! A higher walled tired (protects the rim) with low air pressure is the answer in my book. Of course, when you get to those northern rock quarry's its a different story - GOSH I LOVE THIS STATE - talk about variety!!

I like to run Michelin MS2 starcross with my kx. I've only really ridden it on clay. But it's a soft terrain tire. So i suppose it'll do better, and i'm impressed with it on the clay.

Do the s12's hold up on the rocks in the U.P.?

It's interesting, I found it depends on the size. The 110 equivalent width does not, while the wider 120 equivalent does. If you look at the center knob on the different widths, they're narrower on a the narrower tires, and they chunk badly. We quickly ruined a couple S12's on my son's YZ250F until we went to M12's and solved the problem. The S12's on my 250 haven't had a problem. But then, we certainly have different riding styles too! (as in I see him for about 20 seconds when we ride, then he's gone!).

Is anyone using the new 773's in Michigan?

i use the 773's, there nice but wear really fast.
The hook up is amazing but, i have yet to ride any gnarly terrain. The meadows east and west loop was a good spot for the 773's to shine.

I was always a dunlop fan.......990, 752, 755, 756, etc. I loved the 990's. I think they were the best sand tire ever made. Even better than the current crop. To bad they quit making them. Now I am sold on the S12's.

My favorite set-up is Dunlop 755 Front (Michelin M12 front is a good second choice) and Michelin S-12 Rear. IMO they hold up just fine.

I was thinking about asking pretty much the same question not too long ago...anyway now I've got a Dunlop 756 on its way. This will be the first non stock rear tire I've ever had on a bike...and I'm excited :yeehaw: (it's amazing what all this snow will DO to a person :moon: )

And you're going to MTU?!?

You better pick up a winter sport (other than drinking beer!) or you will go bonkers up there. Remember, their idea of fun is pulling all-nighters building gigantic snow sculptures!

I'd suggest skiing or snowboarding. The U.P. has some pretty decent mountains (for the midwest). Magoo can hook you up. Mt. Bohemia is very close to MTU, but I'd stay away your first season. Kinda like hitting the 'AA' loop from what I understand! The resort near the Porcupine Mountains has a $99 season pass. It'd be a great way to stay conditioned for riding.

Actually, the only thing that's really torturing me about all the snow is that I have this NICE NEW GREEN BIKE THAT I HAVEN'T EVEN RIDDEN YET THAT'S JUST SITTING IN MY GARAGE! AARGH! I'm pretty sure I'll be able to handle it next winter.
