Why Nitrogen ?

Can someone in the know explain why Nitrogen is used in a rear shock ? Could CO2 be used instead ? It would be easier as is it much more readily available. Any help appreciated.

Because Nitrogen is less affected by heat. It is even used as air in racecar tires...
