Winter Projects, Anyone

Just curious if anyone has a rebuild/restoration project lined up for this winter. If so, tell us about it!

I was going to do a teardown/refresh job on a '90' KDX200 but being injured has put a financial hold on it, maybe next summer I can swing it.

I have started, however, on an interesting floor-up restoration of a '86' KX80 for a racing buddy of mine who has the money but not the time. He has a slew of Nephews and Nieces who are getting too big for pw50's and asked me to bring this lump of yard art back to life.

It has sat for several years out in the sun and rain and just looked like 10 miles of bad road. I did the teardown last week and only got a few surprises, now it's just a matter of throwing money at it till it's all shiny again :) .

Anyone else got a project going?

i have my rm 250 torn down to the smallest bits right now. Shes gettin her frame painted, all fluids including suspension replaced, I spec'd the top end and everything's still real fresh(it doen't have many hours on), cleaned the power valve out, repacked the silencer, it's getting new radiator hoses, carb vent hoses, chain rollers, chain slider, guide block, and lots of cleaning/polishing/lubricating. It will be done long before the weather gets nice again, so i'll be real anxious to get out in the spring. It's gonna be for sale, so I probably won't have it long. I kinda got the same thing going as IndyYZ85. Stripping it down, painting the frame. New exhaust system and Replacing what ever I feel like needs replacing. (Sprockets, Pegs, Seat, Bars maybe, Clutch lever, possibly whole clutch.) Basically just something to keep me busy when I'm not working on my vehicle.

Switching my 1968 Bultaco MK2 250 from right shifter to left. Not necessarily a "rebuild" or "restore", but I will be inspecting the whole thing as I have to split the cases to get the job done.

Going to finally finish my sons CZ tore it down to give it the Krylon touch and maybe a new tire. Three grand and a year later its almost to nice to have any fun on.

$75 bucks, you have to be kidding me.. I believe I could have a job at a McDonalds today, work 3 or 4 days, get paid next Friday and quit... I would have the $75 to buy the bike, plus a little extra for gas!!

I'm currently saving $3000 for a bike, should have it by middle of January, and I don't have a job either. (long story, don't ask)

My big one this winter will be a '75 KX400. Will race that one next season if I can get it together. Top end is the biggie there. Hard to find. Come on tax season. I am excited about the KX, because it is the first factory race bike that I have started with. From what I hear, they are brutally powerful, too much for the chasis. (sounds like a Kaw to me!)

Up until now, I have always stripped down and modified enduros. (for like the last 20 years). I like seeing what I can get out of a bike that no one would think of racing.

Last season, I had my Yamaha DT based machine at the track, and a fellow said " I used to ride one of those to high school!"

And my bighorn? My favorite comment so far has been, "Ive got one of those. Id never think to race it though!"

The Yamaha I finished last winter is going to my Brother who will be joining me next season. Its only got three motos on it. I hardly broke it in, but I figure I shouldnt try and run THREE bikes next season, and I couldnt bear to part with it.

My bikes are functional only. I dont go the long green on the new Excel rims, and repro plastics and $300 shocks and the powder coated hubs and stainless spokes, etc. (Cant afford it- no disrespect to those who make the really nice ones! )

My engines, all new though. Thats where I put what money I have and I do all work myself. So I usually wind up with about $600 to $700 in the things all told.

1986 Yamaha XT350!!! 1K so far... and I figure I have another $300 or $400 to go. I hope to have it all done by Christmas (yeah right, but at least I can dream :) ) I'm cleaning the engine block right now as we speak (yes, its on my computer desk haha) MAJOR PAIN to clean... Hopefully it will run once I'm done :cool:

my winter project is restoring my 85 yz125. I'm putting a new top end after 7 years, lol. powder coating the frame and all new sprockets and maybe replacing 2nd and 3rd gear in my tranny.

my project is a 03 sx 125.
new 06 plastics and graphics ,04 subframe and airbox,05 seat,powder coated black frame and silver pegs,full hgs exhaust,new crank,mains and 2nd gear and to top it all off I have had eric work his magic and turn the top end into a 144 with mo better porting.
will be running her in in the morning hopefully .

Finish the Elsinore

Finishing (again) the 1976 CR125 Elsinore.
Touch up the frame paint, redo the clutch and hopefully get the DG swingarm mounted.

I've been delaying the swingarm because I'd like to have it converted to a modern style chain adjuster on. I hate the way it is now.

I'm just fixing up my 74 MX 360 for the Sportsman 500 Expert class. I have the head and cylinder sent to John at Pro-Flo right now. I also hope to get a pair of works performance shocks and possibly a PVL ignition. She's got to be ready for the Waterman, Ill. indoor vintage race in January.

haha yeah im gonna work this weekend with my grandpa for 20 dollars an hour, that will buy the bike but it needs to be restored. where can i find plastics for it, i might use 78 plastics because the 79's had ugly square fenders.

79 RM80 plastic, hmmmm... No luck in the Dennis Kirk catalog, Maier only goes back to 1980 for the RM80.

Could try bikebandit.com or you might just have to run "universal" stuff and make it work. The fenders should be easy but the sidecovers might be a pain to find.

I have some:

1) Take my 2001 VOR 503 motor and graft it to a 2002 EN chassis. One of the best handling chassis I have ridden with the best motor for me that exists. :nod:

2) Build another 1979 KTM 420 MC80. I have the bits and pieces. Have to get some shocks rebuild, the rest I can handle. ;)

3) Build another 2 box stalls in the barn. Along with 4 free standing stalls....we took on four more ex-race horses to rehabilitate and train into other jobs...hope to find homes for them next year.

4) Rebuild from the crank up a McCulloch 660 Gear Grive Chainsaw (I collect & resore big old ones...its my other motorsports hobby..instant gratification and I NEED them to help maintain this farm and to log our 266acres. )

5) Do the cosmetics on My Disston DA-211 Two cylinder, 12hp Chainsaw which really is a old mercury outboard power head driving a big chain saw...just got it running now it needs a make-over

Restoring a YZ60 very similar to the one I received for christmas in 1984. I plan on a full cosemtic and mechanical restoration, but the bike will be for display purposes in my house.

Call me crazy, but this is my winter project: Make my 76 360 Husky street legal,sort of a post vintage supermotard. I already have all the parts I need laying around the shop. The only thing I question is about passing emissions. Does anyone have any experience passing emissions with a premix 2 stroke, here in Maricopa County?
