Hi all;

I am in the process of changing over to the 4 stroke world :) , but I have a couple of questions. I have decided on the 2003 WR450f, but  I read a post in (what bike do I get) stating that the 450f needs the rings replaced every 25 hours?  If so, this seems like a pain in the butt.  If the rings need to be replaced that often than maybe the WR250f.  I weigh in at 200 + with gear and race hare scrambles and woods riding.  Would the Wr250f be enough or should I step up to the Wr450f (if the rings are not an issue).

I wouldn't worry about that. If you are a pro racer on a yz 450 then you would be replacing them every 25 hours but not a WR rider. Yamaha is considering making a street legal WR like the DRZ and I doubt that they would even consider it if that was the case. You should be able to get a few seasons out of a piston and rings on a WR. There are countless WR400s out there still on the original rings.

if a post read 450f needs rings replacing every 25 hours, i'm pretty sure they were reffering to the CRF450.
if the WR250/400/426 bikes are anything to go by, it will do heaps more than 25 or so hours before ring replacement. the new WR450 sound sweet, and i would certainly look into one.
oh, and all the WRs here in Australia are already street legal. a company here does the ADR compliancing on all the WRs before they reach the dealers. They are terrible to ride on the road though!

i have a 250F, but haven't ridden the new 450 yet. they are terrible on the road because the seat is way too hard and the suspension is firm. too uncomfortable!
also, just like the EXC KTMS, the WRs are a race bike meant for the dirt. the only reason they are registerable here in OZ is because you need the rego to compete in many enduro events.

I think the WR450 will make a fantastic dual-sport bike.I would have to slap a set of more "pavement friendly" tires on it.

You might want to do something with the seat.  My buddies 02 WR is made from concrete!  Its just hard compared to my marshmellow seet ;)

Oh a traitor eay!!! I bet that WR450 will make an AWESOME D/S bike too!! I have been tole that Yam is going to leave the tranny at 5 speed for this bike - should make for a real nice h/s, woods rippin, D/S steed. Who knows maybe they (Yam) will inspire Honda into doing something simular with the CRF!!! Sheez what does it take to get these companies to listen to us............

I hear ya. :eek: after riding with my stock KTM seat,I can just about take anything now. :)

You can buy softer seats if that's the "big" problem in making it a D/S

I'm not 100% sure, but arn't most softer foam seats taller?  With a 29 inch inseam it makes it a little hard to even touch the ground as it is.  Let alone with an inch or more added to the seat!  If your using it just to connect trails and  it was not a daily commuter I would not bother much.  Anyway,  Just my observations.
