I am thinking of getting my daughter a dirtbike, she is 12 and is tall for her age. Would an XR100R be a good bike to start on? I can get a 2000 got $1500.00.Your advice is appreciated.Thanks.

xr100

Excellent choice. When my twin sons were younger they had an xr80 and xr100 to learn on. Not a big difference between the two except seat height, etc. Not overpowered and extremely user friendly. I kept the oil changed and no other maintenance to speak of. When I sold them I got what I paid for them originally, good resale value and sought out by many. We have alot of fond memories about thiose bikes. The 100 was a 1993 and it was a great unit, not like the 2strokes that require constant attention to jetting, topends, etc. Definetly go for it. If I could get my wife to ride she'd be on an xr100. Good luck!

Asrith-
Whatever its worth ;), my wife just started riding 2 months ago and I bought her a XR200. She is petite, 5'4" & 105 lbs, and she loves it. She learned on a TTR125L and was able to flat-foot it which made her very comfortable, but we were afraid she would out grow it too quickly, so we went with the XR.

After 5 rides she has been improving quickly and I think the XR is going to allow her plenty of room to grow as rider. The power and suspension are good and it just keeps truckin' along.

So you may want to consider a XR200, just my opinion. :)

Asrith,
xr/xl 100 is a perfect starter bike for a first timer.(enough power to be fun, not enough to hurt you) There great for learning clutching (starting and stopping) because of the low end power they offer,
also great resale on them when its time to move up. After my wife gets done with hers, I figure my daughter will be ready for it, then my son. also great pit bike ;)

My youngest son is on a '00 xr100. He is 4'-9".
Absolutely one of the best learner bikes available.

I think that is about blue-book for the bike, but don't worry because you should be able to get most of it back in a year or so.

The xr200 is a great little bike too, but it is a little bit large for kids first starting out, IMO. The xr200 is between the xr100 and a full frame bike.

LOL....BPracer...is your wife still growing?? :think

The XR100 would be a perfect choice. I have an XR200 and the seat height is approx 33 inches (I think). I'm 5'3" and can't tough flat footed. More like my toes touching on both sides. For a beginner, just learning to ride, I think being to put your feet, flat on the ground will be a great comfort. Both bikes are very easy to ride and pretty much bullet proof. Mine is still running which is proof enough;) .

If she out grows the XR100 in a year or so, the market is usually pretty good on the bikes and you shouldn't have any trouble selling it to get her something bigger. Out growing a bike will also do wonders for her confidence. I've heard it time and time again, don't buy a bike to "grow into" because it will make it harder to learn on.

Also, check out the TTR-125 for another choice. Let her sit on what ever your are looking at and see what feels best for her. Let us know what you decide and how your daughter does.

Well I like them young (J/K) . ;) No, I think the growing is done, but she is definately taking leaps and bounds as a rider.

I got it pretty good, just this morning she told me she wanted to ride again this Sunday so she can get in another day before we go to Lucerne for Thanksgiving weekend.:) :) :) Life is good!

An XR100 would be a great bike to learn on. Another great bike to learn on would be the TTR125, or the TTR125L. The TTR125 is a little more powerful, and has way better suspension, and transmission, and a disc front brake. I learned on one of these, and they really are a great bike. More bike than an XR100 in my opinion, but a learner doesn't probably care about that. But they are a little bit more once they learn. And they are blue!:p

XR 100 | TT-R 125L

Well I went to the dealer today to take a physical look at the bikes. The XR100 is a little to small in my opinion, and I looked at the TT-R 125L a much better bike I must say. I think that is what I am going to go with. The reason being that she is an amazon for her age, she is at least 5'5" and I think that the yamaha will be the best for her. I appreciate all your inputs, I never thought that I would get such responses. I am hoping to get the deal on this for around 2000.00 for a 01 model. The XR 100 is just a little to short and I would rather buy a bike that I do not have to sell later. Thanks all! Let me know if anyone has anything to say about the TT-R 125L.

At 5'5" I would agree the XR100 would be a bit small. But also if she is that tall at 12, I wouldn't be thinking a TTR125L would last her too long either. Especially if she becomes a decent rider, by next year she could be wanting a KTM200/EXC:)
