In july i bought a 2001 xr250r, rode a couple of times, just easy 25 mile rides, but when i went with my friend for a serious 55 mile ride the bike started acting really wierd at about 45 miles. occasionally when i twisted the throttle(clutch in and out) the engine sounded really bogged down and even died a couple of times. unless i accelerated extremely smooth then the bike would choke and almost stall. this is my first XR and i am not very firmillar with the bike, so i dont know what might be wrong.

Replace the plug, clean the carb.

Clean the air filter. Oil it thoroughly with a proper filter oil. Let it set overnight before you install it.

I had a similar problem with my 02 XR250. I suggest you thoroughly clean the carb and you may need to adjust the fuel screw. I used 2 and 1/2 turns out from the bottom.
