Hi there,

I'm just about to replace the left hand side crank case gasket on my XR250R 94. I was wondering if someone knows what the large adjuster is for in the middle of it and also a smaller one just above. I figured I should know what these two things were for, before removing the crank case.

Cheers

DO they have hex key holes in them? If so, those are your covers for setting the piston to TDC for valve adjustments.

I believe James is right, the small hole is to view the marks for TDC and the big one in the middle is for turning the crank to get it to TDC. You would also want to have the valve covers off to check tension on the rocker arms to make sure you weren't a revolution off.

I am 99% sure that those covers just give you access to the underlying parts and they should come right off with the left side and not require any adjustments. BUT, it probably wouldn't hurt to take those little covers off the side and those big covers on top of the head after you get it back together and check your valve clearances while you are fixing stuff. Bike will probably run a whole lot better if they need adjustment.

I'm 100% sure you won't need to mess with anything besides the gasket and bolts if you plan to replace the cover. Those are just access ports as described above. It would be a good idea to make any adjustments to the valves as part of your servicing the bike but if you don't feel it's in need then don't bother as nothing will change by replacing the cover and gasket.

They are not adjustments, but they are there to make adjustments. The big one lets you get a wrench on the crank shaft to turn it and the little one lets you see where you are in the stroke, so that you can adjust your valves.
