i have a '02 xr400, and am wondering if a manual (aftermarket) would fit it, if the maunaul is for a 96-00 and the bike is a '02.

I don't think they've changed a thing on the bike since they introduced it, other than bold new graphics. I have a '97 XR400 and I bought a newer manual and haven't had any problems with things not matching up. You should be fine with that manual.
