I hope someone can help me with this sticky throttle prob. It's as if the slide is being sucked down when I back off to nothing . I heard of a cure by drilling a hole in slide can stop it but I'm not drilling any holes without dimensions, has anybody heard of this or any other ideas.A flat slide would cure it but they cost $800 in oz

OZ600R, add the push cable. The problem you describe is well known with the XR600. The standard is carby is fine. Dont wast money on an after market carby to fix a sticking slide problem.

I sound like a preacher man.

Sincerely,

Preacher man I'll try it ,I know It was a prob with the older 600's like mine 87 but the thing that get's me is it doesn't feel sticky if It's not running . My brother had an 87 model like mine and Ballards told him to drill the hole in the slide but still ended up buying a flat slide . How does the push cable stop the sticking from the idle position. If youv'e had this prob and it sound's like you have you know how annoying it is.Thank's mate I'll give it a go.

Seems to me there must be a reason for a push/pull style throttle cable setup. First thing I would do is replace the missing parts. Am I missing something or is this extremely obvious?

With the engine off, the engine isn't sucking the throttle slide into the carby bore. Great vacuum forces exist in the intake manifold at idle and during deceleration. This is probably the cause of the bind and the reason Honda designed a solution.

Sorry about that.

I had an 84 xr500r for a good while and these dual carbs are creepy. My current XR also has the push-pull cables and I never really understood why the function couldn't be accomplished with a single cable and a return spring like on a truck.

I am confident in Honda's design but wish I knew what was going on.

I put the new cable's on today they didn't realy make any difference, the only thing is the old cable was stretched and had no more adjustment. So when I took it for a ride I kept on adjusting the pull cable so it's got no freeplay but still goes back to the idle stop and it seem's not too bad.
Like you say Highbeam the spring set up like on a Holly Carb is a much better way to go , I might add a spring to make the throttle a bit lighter see what happen's and I'll let you know.
I also had an old xr500 the first model in oz 82- 83 great bike in It's day didn't have duel carb's in Australia though.
Thank's for your help

Hi there,
I have an '84 XL600 with the push/pull, but I have never installed the push cables. I have never experienced the problem you describe and I do have dual carbs as well. Have you dragged out the shop manual and followed every detail of carb throttle set-up? Sounds patronizing, i know, but sometimes SOME DAMN THING is overlooked. I am interested in what you ultimately do to correct this problem.

Finally sorted out the problem the first thing is pull the carby apart, drill a 2mm hole 22mm down from the top of the slide on the engine side of the slide.
But the thing is the return spring on the cable pully it has way too much tension on it , so what you have to do is straighten out the end of the spring that hook's on the carby so it now sit's under the top of the carby and not that little piece it use to hook on to. Then where the other end of the spring hook's over the cable pully cut a slot in the pully 12mm long so the end of the spring slides down to the end of the slot.
The tension of the spring is reduced by about half .
This makes the throttle stop that hard sticky feeling and makes the bike heap's better to ride.
TRUST ME IT WORK'S
