a kid in my neighborhood wants to switch from a quad to a dirtbike and has his eyes on a 1999 XR 80 that looks like it's in good shape; asking price is $1000; the kid is 13 and weighs 90 pounds....

I would say he outgrows this within the year; the XR is underpowered; suspension too soft for MX. He is hot to buy this, but I am skeptical as to the value of the bike and the bike size for a kid who is sure to outgrow this quickly... any comments are welcome...

That seems a bit high to me, but if it's in good shape, the indestructable XR should hold value well for resale. Underpowered might not be a bad thing to get him use to shifting, control, and all that.

keep in mind the kid has been running a 4-wheeler ragged for a year. I have not seen him ride a 2-wheeler but I expect him to do well on the bike..... depending on how much he'll grow over the next 12 months, the bike may be too small for him in size and power..... my thought is this: buy this one but at a better price ($700-750), and be prepared to upgrade to a 125 in a year... I haven't found any pricing on 6-year old XR80s...
(found a manual for $25 on ****...which he needs to buy also)

thanks Lou for your comments...

Doesn't sound too high to me. Heck a 50 will go for 800 - 900 used all day long up this way. An 80 for 1k sounds OK.
Is the guy selling firm on his price? Offer him 900 if he balks walk on to greener pastures.
If he does get it. By Summers end he will be ready for an MXer.

If it's clean Pokie that really is a decent price. It will be too small and underpowered for serious riding but a little magic from Forward Motion makes them quit a bit of fun. We still have our 2002 because it's a good time. A better solution might be an 85 MXer of some kind which should last a couple years.

thanks Pat ...even little jumps will be a problem with this suspension. I would rather see him get a real MXer.... or at least a TTR125 with a little more oomph... but as usual money is the limiting factor

thanks for all the comments guys...

thanks for the comments...

price negotiated down to $900 (now firm).... but he will need to beef up the suspension;at least the tires look ok, except the rear is flat right now....

the kid has no patience to shop for options..... his quad sold today and Kyle MUST have two wheels NOW...
