The YZ/WR cam gears have alignment dimples which are used to set the cams during installation. The service manual contradicts itself by discribing one thing and picturing another. I own a WR.

My question. Is the WR exhaust cam supposed to be advanced or retarded from the level alignment? (standing on the left side of the bike looking at the cam gears, clockwise or counter clockwise).

Ok, you caught me. I moved the cam to YZ timing and want to set it back to WR timing, and forget which way to go.

while looking at the sprokets on the left hand side of the WR engine, you need to rotate the exhaust cam one tooth clockwise to achive YZ timing. this retards the exhaust cam.

on your YZ tmed WR, move it counter clockwise, or forward one tooth.

wayneo426 has other ideas on this issue though. better ask him.

Retarding the exhaust cam on a WR250 1 tooth yields only a slight increase in midrange performance. Basically gives a WR more of a YZ "hit". Top end horsepower remains the same. Depending on your riding style or conditions not worth doing. Stock WR timing powerband is smoother. Dyno tested myself.
