I bought a used 2001 YZF426 a few months ago and it has always been hard to start.... I mean kick your furfing leg off hard to start. Well I replaced the coil recently and it helped tremendously but it seems like if you don't start it on the first few kicks it floods it and it won't start (choked or non-choked)

Any thoughts please!!

P.S. DRD Exhaust and the valves were checked 15 hours ago. all stock other than that.

So what were your valve specs?

Do you have the stock exhaust cam?

What is your jetting on the bike?

Answer those questions. But I have most of the solution for you.

buy a YZ450 exhaust cam or HotCams with the autodecompression. Install it, check the valve clearances.

The carbs are work in progress in the 426 bikes. Best bet is to buy the JD jet kit, install as directed there, do the BK mod to the carb and time the AP pump. Install a longer fuel screw, adjust it as needed about 1.85 turns out

After that it should run great! Start first kick hot or cold.

A friend of mine has a 2000 426 and when his gets hard to start he cleans the pilot jet. So check and clean the pilot jet first - it's fast and simple.
