'01 CR 250 Clutch Basket Removal

Someone please tell me I don't have to remove the entire right side crankcase cover to get the clutch basket out. Am I missing something here?

Sorry, but yes you have to remove the right side case cover.

If you have the proper tool, you will only have to remove the small right side cover. Use a clutch hub holder and an impact driver.

I've spun the nut off using the impact. Problem is the basket won't fit through the opening in the crankcase cover. I have no idea why Honda did this. This must be a design error.

So, you have to split the case to get the basket out?

Sure sounds like it. I had to pull the case cover to get at mine. Even thouh it's an old Zinger.

I believe the gears on the outer basket are too large to fit through the clutch cover, not certain though. In any case, it's not difficult to remove the right case cover. Just insure you pay attention to reinstalling the kick starter mechanism as there are alignment marks.

Drain the tranny fluid and coolant. Remove your kick starter and remove the water hose. You may need to remove the bolt from your rear brake pedal for clearance. Fairly straight forward job.

Yea, I can get the case cover off fairly quick. It just pisses me off that I have to. Thanks for the replies.

I imagine Honda intended a person to replace plates through this hole. Not the entire assembly.

Come on now. Who does not love replacing $25.00 gaskets????

Maybe it is not a bad idea to have a good look inside the entire cover?

If you need any help, drop me a line, I just replace my basket and plates in my 2000 cr250 about a month ago.
Its not just hondas, I had the question when I replaced my clutch, It took me 40 mins to pull the cover off, and about and hour to put it back on!(Kickstarter spring poped out) Found out after I had it together.
