01' Suzuki JR80 Woes!!

I have a JR80 that will idle just fine but when put in gear and moved it just boggs down to nothing. My son gets so frustrated he won't ride. :bang: I took the muffler apart and it was coated with black soot. The owner's manual recommends cleaning it with a wire brush. That did not work. I plan on trying the RM exhaust, and I was wondering what difference it would make on the JR to just remove the screen :think: that I can't get clean?

One more comment,
I have experience with the Honda XR's and I would never recommend the JR80 for anything more than backyard riding. These bikes perform very badly in the woods on the trails. Mainly, it's the suspension that holds them back. Kids love airtime and this bike loves golfcourse greens only.

clean the carb, and put a fresh plug in it. sounds like the carb has dirt in it. Does it run better with a little choke on? I have the DS version. We dropped the front sproket one tooth, and raised the rear two teeth to make a really good trail bike for a small kid.

have to agree with gnarly kaw,check air filter also.rm exhaust will not fit that bike.fmf makes a good pipe for that bike.my son put over 2000 miles of single and double track on his before we outgrew it.suspension is a bit weakand its not a big bike so keeping that in mind it is a fine machine

My first bike was a 78 GT 80 and it had one of those removeable baffles also... That thing would get carboned up and it would bog down also from too much back pressure... A wire brush would'nt cut it, my dad would heat it up, with a tourch, or over a fire and burn all that spooge off, then wire brush it... But it's the spooge inside you can't wire brush off so when it the spooge gets all carbonised over the fire, lightly tap it on the ground and you'll see a ton more carbon come out from within the baffel... really heat it up and burn all that stuff out and it'll scream again...
