looking to update up to a 250 two stroke from an 02 250f. Wondering about maintenance costs and performance characteristics of the two strokes. The honda is 10 lbs lighter than my 250f, I have read that the yz250 has the motor in stock form to beat. How abut jumping and handling, no complaints on the 250f, it has to be wound up to get the most out of it. Thanx for any info

03 YZ250 has great engine of course...the best 2 stroke this year. Handles well not spectular but its gets the job done. I haven't had any issues with jetting or anything going wrong.

03 CR250 has decent motor which I think is too sleepy but its smooth, making it easy to ride. Buddy needed to rejet the bike when he got it but no other issues. 03 CR handles great, good initial turn-in. But must maintain momentum or downshift to stay in the power coming out of a turn.

Both bikes are very neutral in the air and like it too.

Maintenance. You got your premix that gets mixed into the gas. Have to change oil every 4-5 rides. clean air filter when needed, usually 2-3 rides. Top end once a year perhaps sooner if you race or really wring the bikes neck. I don't think there's anything diiferent than 4 stroke except premix and jetting.

What about the power differences between the 03yz compared to the 250f, controllable, and usable, linear? I havent had a chance to ride one yet. I ride mostly moto with some offroad, and am 5'10" 160lbs. Also, do you think the maintenance costs are equaled out or more for one or the other?Thanx for any imput-

As far as I know 4stroke parts and rebuilds are more pricey than 2strokes. All them valves and stuff. 4stroke exhaust gets into the $800 while you can easily get exhaust under $300 for 2 strokes.

The 250f as I understand is a 125 with more torq. I haven't ridden one so I don't know about the throttle response. The YZ250 has extremely crisp response (the quickest and most sensitive of the bikes I have ridden). It has power everywhere but its true strength lies in its midrange pull. the bottom is just enuff to get you to the fat spot.

Spectra, is the yz250's power usable in all types of conditions? is it managable when you get into the fat spot or is it a spin and wait for traction? Thanx for your imput-

I have the 02YZ250, it is the most managable 2stoke engine I have ever riden and I hear the 03 is better. A better word would probably be wide. Power everywhere and nowhere does it jump out from under you. That said, it is VERY different to ride than the 250F (i also have owned a 01 250F). Managable in 2stroke terms is much different than 4stroke terms.

The power is manageable. I use the clutch on trails far more than I use it on a track. But I have never run out of power. It hooks up surprising well. the stock tires aren't the best and tend to give when the bike is leaned over.

You still have to respect the power...if you get too comfortable and just open the throttle wide open the bike will take off if your not ready. The bike is very quick. I'm 240lbs and the bike is scary fast even with my big a$$ on there.

The only thing I had problems were with how touchy the throttle is. On hard chop, my hands would get shaky and blip the throttle at the worst times. The bike reponds instantly which is good and bad. Power is on tap when you need it...whether you want it or not.
